BUT NOT IF SHE CAN HELP IT

Catalia "Cat" Fisa lives disguised as a soothsayer in a traveling circus. She is perfectly content avoiding the danger and destiny the Gods-and her homicidal mother-have saddled her with. That is, until Griffin, an ambitious warlord from the magic-deprived south, fixes her with his steely gaze and upsets her illusion of safety forever.

Griffin knows Cat is the Kingmaker, the woman who divines the truth through lies. He wants her as a powerful weapon for his newly conquered realm-until he realizes he wants her for much more than her magic. Cat fights him at every turn, but Griffin's fairness, loyalty, and smoldering advances make him increasingly hard to resist and leave her wondering if life really does have to be short, and lived alone.

exactly my kind of trashy fantasy romance with so much snarky banter and fun you don't mind the oft-used tropes
By kbirdlincoln
Recently, I'm finding that I can completely forgive over-used romance and Fantasy tropes as long as there is snarky banter. And also the heroine can't be a wet blanket...... And also the hero has to growl and say things like "I claim you" and "you're mine"...no wait, those are actually the over-used tropes I was just talking about!

Yep, you guessed it, A Promise of Fire has a growly Alpha-hero (who is actually a Beta, how's that for snide irony) and a super-powerful Mary Sue of a heroine who is beautiful and has multiple ill-defined powers, and doesn't want to let the hero love her because its TOO DANGEROUS for him (cue an exasperated sigh from Kirsten), and to just top off the trope cupcake with a cherry, they also STOP THE HANKY PANKY or de-escalate it about 5 times for no reason that I can see. I mean, wowsers, what with all the wings unfurling in Cat's chest and bolts of lust you wouldn't think they could continually be interrupted without someone actually coming in and interrupting them, but I don't care in the end.

It doesn't bother me one whit. The reason I give this one 5 stars what with all the tropes more well-used than a (insert off color reference here) is because of two things: oodles of delightful snarky banter between Beta Sinta (his sister is the Alpha of the kingdom) and Cat but also between Cat and the other hunky members of Team Beta.

And also because Cat is super-grouchy. She complains like all the time about it being too hot, or there not being enough fruit or people being stupid. It's fun.

Plus Cat has a secret that isn't majorly obvious from chapter one (only majorly obvious from like halfway in when you want to hit Beta Sinta over the head with one of Cat's many knives and be like "duh....how can you not guess who she is?").

Meanwhile, they're gallivanting all over a faux Greek-fantastical countryside complete with cyclops, dragons named Sybaris, lightening scars on the earth from Zeus, and goat cheese phyllo triangles which Cat can't stand. Once in a while they save each other. But in the end, it's all leading up to a second book where they set their sights higher than just jumping each other's bones and surviving the next dragon attack.

Going over now to pre-order the next in the series. This is my kind of trashy fantasy romance.

A Promise Unfulfilled
By Soph B
Let's start with how cool this summary is- Cat is a Kingmaker, can divine truth from lies and has been hiding is a traveling circus for years presumably learning about people and the world as she travels with her found family of weird and interesting folks. A warlord of great success comes upon her and sees through her disguise as a simple soothsayer and decides to use her talents for his own gain. This is such a great premise and I was instantly taken in with the idea.

The book itself starts out on a roll, we meet the warlord on the second page, before we even get a good feeling for the circus or Cat's circus life. I found the character of Cat very disappointing, she didn't make a lot of sense to me. She had grown up in a harsh and terrible environment, spent a few years on the run paranoid, afraid to create real connections, but she acted incredibly sheltered, made confusing decisions and was very immature. She held grudges, lacked strategic thinking and was overwhelmed with many situations. Cat is 23 years old, foolish and infantilised at every turn, completely dependent on the warlord. She is super powerful, but manipulated consistantly and lacking in confidence. She will declare a facet of herself, or her intent with all the bluster and muster one could have only to have it thrown back in her face in the next breath by our male protagonist, and oh, if he says so, then it must be so.

I hated the scene where she accidentally drugged herself and floated around, taking off her clothes in front of him, why was that even in the book? How humiliating. There is another scene where they are dreadfully overwhelmed in battle, and she is desperate to help (she is super-powerful, you know!) and he gives her a choice, she can have agency to fight and her weapons but only if she binds herself to him forever, as long as he lives. That's pretty awful guys.

This book touches on one of my biggest pet peeves, where a character suffers a lot of trauma but it is truly just a plot device to show you -how- strong she is, because she is untouched by it, really. Is Griffin/Beta Sinta so idiotic that he doesn't understand that if she's been tortured she might have reflective actions around knives? Why does he get irritated and rebuke her (to the point of physically holding her down and chastising her, literally the last thing you should do with a person with PTSD) when she reacts badly to him in her space? There are some uncomfortable scenes that lie on the nonconsensual side of things, but this is fantasy, and I know some people like the hyperdominant male narrative.

It's not a badly written book, so it gets two stars, but the content is just...not for me.

A Promise of Fire
By Amy
I've been eagerly anticipating this book since I first heard about it months ago. I'm happy to say A Promise of Fire meets all expectations, and then some.

Eight years ago Cat ran away from home and ended up joining the circus as a soothsayer. Of course this is all a front to keep people from finding out who she really is: The Kingmaker. Everything changes when she runs into Griffin, warlord for the Sintan royals. He knows her for what she is, and knowing his kingdom needs her power, he kidnaps her.

I wasn't prepared for the story being so seated in Greek Mythology, but I loved it. The land of Thalyria is divided into three kingdoms Sinta, Tarvan, Fisa. Divided further into those with magic (Magoi) and those without (Hoi Polloi). There's Oracles, and Gods, and various creatures. The world Amanda Bouchet created is wonderful, and completely easy to become enmeshed within.

Cat was a wonderfully snarky, stubborn heroine. She's running from her past and determined not to bring anyone else into her troubles, but I loved watching her walls crumble, and see her form relationships. Pretty much shattering everything she believes herself to be.

The chemistry between Cat and Griffin just jumps off the page. There is so much sexual tension between them I couldn't stop reading because I was just waiting for them to do something about it! The banter is definitely on point as Cat tries desperately to keep herself from feeling too much for him, but Griffin is just as stubborn as Cat and once he sets his sights on her nothing can dissuade him.

There's a lot of mystery that revolves around Cat's powers and her past. It's pretty easy to figure out early on, she kind of beats around the bush a bit, and it verges on being dragged out too long. It's saved, however, because there are still enough blanks to fill into the story in order to get the full picture. Plus, it helps a lot that I really didn't want to leave this world or characters. Is it too much to ask that the next book be released now?

I'm so happy that this one lived up to my expectations. It's an action-packed, romantic ride, and I can't wait to see how things unfold further.
