This is a workbook which was required by our program director, and in fact I found it to be really useful. The practices were coming right out of the textbook, so it was a beneficial way to learn and practice the textbook.

About the Author
Hugh is married with two kids and lives only five streets away from Andrew in north London. He grew up on the south coast of England and in South London and graduated in English Literature from Goldsmith's College, part of the University of London, in 1991. Like many native speakers, he then drifted into language teaching, only really becoming serious about it during a four-year stint in Indonesia in the mid-90s. He returned to London to do his DELTA and then an MA TESOL and moved soon afterwards into coursebook writing. He worked initially with Michael Lewis and Jimmie Hill, the two men behind The Lexical Approach, a book that influenced him enormously. In his (far too limited) free time, he continues to play in a band, The Beatpack; he wrote for a music magazine and DJs occasionally; he reads voraciously; enjoys cooking, and is a life-long Arsenal supporter!

Andrew is married with two children and lives in North London with his partner and son, now his daughter has left home. He grew up in Birmingham and went to Nottingham University, where he studied English Studies. After that he went to Spain to teach English 'for a year' while he decided what he wanted to do with his life. It turned out he wanted to teach English! After that he returned to the UK where he worked in various language schools and adult colleges, completed a DipTEFLA and trained to deliver CELTA courses. He then worked at the University of Westminster for 17 years with a four-year break, when he went back to Valencia with his family. When he isn't working, he plays football twice a week, cycles round the city and enjoys London. He grows vegetables in an allotment, cooks and watches TV.

About the Author

Michele R. McPhee is the bestselling author of A Professor's Rage, A Date with Death, Heartless, and When Evil Rules-all available from St. Martin's Paperbacks. The former award-winning Police Bureau Chief for the New York Daily News, she was the courts and crime reporter for the Boston Herald where she is now a columnist. Currently she is a New England correspondent for ABC News and a Fox 25 TV contributor. A Date With Death was the basis for a Lifetime TV movie that aired in January 2011. She was also story consultant for the Lifetime movie "Who Is Clark Rockefeller?" that aired in 2010.

McPhee's true crime stories have appeared in more than a dozen national magazines, including Maxim, Stuff, Cosmopolitan, New York, ESPN the Magazine, Gotham, Manhattan File, and other international publications. The Definitive Book If You Want To See The Decline Of The Mob

Chris Paciello was never part of the Mob or anything close to a made member. He started in New York and later in Miami. He had his own quasi mob in both cities. In New York his gang were armed burglars. In Miami his gang was nightclubs.

The reader can't help but draw the ironic parallels of Paciello and Jack Ruby. Both were petty criminals in bigger cities and more mainstream in smaller cities.

The difference was that Paciello went into the witness protection program after ratting on the mob. Furthermore he was able to emerge from the witness protection program in Los Angeles and start up again his nightclub business. While Ruby feared the long reach of the Mob, Paciello did not. McPHEE is a great writer. She writes like a fiction writer who also obviously spent a long time doing research. The book constantly quotes people who were associated with Paciello. The research and quotations provide the reader a more nuanced and in-depth view of it's main character.

If the Sapranos was a study of the Mob's declining influence, "A Mob Story" is a study of it's final decline.

Raw, Readable Mob Tale

This fast-reading narrative covers swaggering young Chris Ludwigsen (AKA Paciello), a NYC street thug who rose quickly to become a successful night club owner in Miami Beach. Author Michelle McPhee describes Paciello's rise from car-radio thief to breakins, threats, and stickups in his association with various New York mafia crews. Then after a botched home invasion resulted in the murder of housewife Judy Shemtov, Chris fled for warmed climes. Down among the beaches and palm trees he opened several successful nightclubs. Paciello was gifted with handsome charm and a certain business acumen. Of course, he stocked his first night club by stealing the liquor supply from a competing establishment. Soon, Paciello's face was on the cover of local magazines, and he dated or hobnobbed with supermodels and stars like Madonna, Jennifer Lopez, Dennis Rodman, etc. But in time his former mates were busted in New York City, and some of them talked. Soon Chris was charged in the Shemtov murder (he wasn't the shooter), and while penned up he too decided to cop a plea.

The author's readable prose matches the mob's fast-money style. Readers get an inside look at street hoods, defined by their penchant for stealing and violence - and in several cases a willingness to rat out pals. Which perhaps explains why the still-potent mafia/crime syndicate has declined somewhat in recent years. This book ranks near the top of the genre, along with CASINO, WISE GUYS, DONNIE BRASCO, and other fast-paced mob narratives.

Self-help without the jargon

This title was a recent selection for a book discussion group that I helped organize for my library. As the only male in the group, I felt somewhat compelled to offer token protest to the selection of this classic example of a "woman's book," but actually I was intrigued by it. Everything I had read about "Gift From the Sea" praised its meditative quality and I had to admit that the promise of that rather appealed to me.
I wound up reading the bulk of the book on Mothers' Day, which seemed quite appropriate, given that among the many issues Lindbergh addresses here is the need for mothers to find a balance between their own needs and those of their children and husbands. The need for time to one's self, a "room of one's own", the need for a spriritual dimension to one's existence--well, it seems so obvious that these needs have to be met if a woman--if any human being--is to be fulfilled and to be able to meet her (or his) responsibilities with joy rather than with dread. But the lessons that Anne Morrow Lindbergh taught in 1955 still need to be voiced in 2000--perhaps more than ever. Lindbergh seems prescient when she speaks of the dangers of the "life of multiplicity" which had already taken root in the immediate post-War era. We know all too well that it has not gotten any better in the past 50 years and that women's lives in particular have become more stressful and, to use Lindbergh's word, "fragmented" in the past half-century.
What distinguishes Lindbergh's book from today's current crop of self-help or New Age sprititual books though is its lyrical quality. Her careful, belletristic prose is soothing and, yes, meditative in and of itself. Reading it seems to bring about the very centeredness and balance that she seeks to describe.
Although she includes no bibliography (and rightly so, as this is not a tract), I would hope that many of her readers would be inspired to seek out the works of some of the writers she quotes in the context of these essays. She does the world a great service in suggesting how Rilke, for example, whose poetry may seem impenetrable at first, can actually speak to the concerns of our own lives.

A Few Shells

What timeless wisdom there is in this little book. Although it was written many decades ago, the challenges and issues faced by Anne Morrow Lindbergh are the same ones faced by women in today's crazy, bustling world. In fact, although women in Siberia, Cameroon, or Ceylon might not have her specific set of circumstances, they can still identify with Lindbergh's ponderings about a woman's life, her obligations, her relationships, and her needs. She lived in an upscale suburb of Connecticut and was the mother of five children, and yet there's something in her writing that can touch the souls of women everywhere whether in a grass hut or trailer beside a busy highway

The chapters in Gift from the Sea center on Lindbergh's musings during a two-week vacation at the shore. Leaving husband, children, and house behind, she lives in a bare beach cabin without heat, telephone, plumbing, hot water, rugs, or curtains. She finds simplicity beautiful and longs to take it home to Connecticut when her vacation ends.

Lindbergh takes a shell at a time and describes it in relation to other things in a woman's life. For instance, the moon shell reminds her that quiet time, solitude, contemplation, and "something of one's own" is needed. The double-sunrise represents the pure relationship found in early stages of friendship and marriage, and she reminds the reader that there is no permanent return to an old form of relationship since all are in the process of change. The oyster bed symbolizes the middle years of marriage and family, especially as the home itself grows and expands to accommodate the growing family.

I first read this book when I was a young mother and could readily understand Lindbergh's comment that saints were so rarely married woman because of the distractions inherent in raising children and running a house. "Human relationships with their myriad pulls--woman's normal occupations in general run counter to creative life, or contemplative life, or saintly life." Now in midlife, I can better understand her affinity for all the shells as reminders that each cycle of the wave, the tide, and the relationship is valid.

I have had my copy since the early 80's, this book is timeless. With renewed interest, I bought several copies for friends after reading The Aviators Wife, A book about the Lindbergh's. Giving one to a bride who is having a beach themed wedding. Love the introspect about relationships and family.
