Do not overlook this book!

Having read a brief reference to this 1961 tragedy, and the subsequent book, I followed through with Kindle/Amazon to consider purchasing it. Although it received 4 out of 5 stars, many reviewers critiqued the authors' rendition as "boring". DEFINITELY NOT TRUE! It is very well-written. The details and atmosphere bring the reader immediately and intimately into this 11-year old girl's horrific experience, her incredible survival and the repercussions on her life and the lives of others. Also intriguing, is the follow-up on the personality of the perpetrator and the personal disintegration that brought him to his final end. A wonderful, can't-put-down read!

I appreciated the factual nature of this book. Though Tere survived a horrible tragedy in her youth, she never gave up. A woman to be admired for her courage and strength.

Very interesting true story.

I liked the way the characters were introduced, stressing each of their personalities. I was able to trust the facts that were presented. I especially appreciated the telling of the legacy of orange becoming the color for water emergency items.

A must have for emergency and critical care veterinary practitioners

We see a lot of emergency cases and a presentation by Dr. Lisciandro opened my eyes to the utility of ultrasound in learning so much more about one's critically ill cases. There is a place for focused ultrasound, and focusing on organ systems, one at a time, is also a good way to improve one's skill set in ultrasound. I use this text a lot in my day-to-day practice.

A must have for any veterinarian. I bought this book to learn ultrasound and after reading the first two chapters I was confidently using an ultrasound machine. Since buying the book, I use an ultrasound machine all the time and have diagnosed free abdominal fluid, splenic masses, pyloric antral masses, and bladder sediment. A great book and a serious must have!

Excellent resource for any veterinarian who has recently begun the long learning curve towards integrating ultrasound into their practice. Very clear, straightforward and practical. Good pictures with thorough explanations (however some pictures are a little dark). I would strongly recommend this book to general practitioners or emergency veterinarians.

About the Author

David E. Simon is a partner in Probitas Corporation, a software development consulting firm. Much of his work at Probitas is in embedded systems for firms such as Apple, Adobe, Hewlett-Packard, and Symbol Technologies. David has 20 years of experience in software development, and is the author of three previous books. He regularly teaches a class on embedded systems for the University of California at Berkeley Extension Program.

A must-read Embedded Software Primer

If you are going to buy only one book on Embedded Software Programming, this should be the one. The author introduces virtually everything an engineer needs to know about programming embedded systems. There are two chapters describing hardware stuff that is useful for the software engineer to know. There is a chapter on Interrupts. There are three chapters on programming in an RTOS environment. All of the chapters include coding examples on what to do, and also examples of code with bugs to watch out for. There is also a chapter on debugging techniques.
All of the other FIVE STAR reviews (and many of the FOUR STAR ones as well) contain more specific points which I won't repeat here.
However, I will echo what I said at the beginnning. If there is only one book you are going to buy about programming embedded systems, this should be the one.

Exactly what it promises to be

The book is well organized, clearly written and full of real code examples. It addresses the common and not-so-common pitfalls, and you can tell it has been written by a "seasoned" engineer. The coverage on RTOS's is excellent.
