Review
"This is a very informative book for both the experienced and beginner to get a grip on internet security using the SSL and TSL protocols. The index is very comprehensive and any term you are looking for is easy to find with page notations that are clear and understandable." - Jay Dan, CTO, ClickSSL

"If you prefer a good howto book, Implementing SSL / TLS Using Cryptography and PKI by Joshua Davies is one of the best books on the subject, and it's up to date." - Carla Schroder, author of "The Linux Cookbook"

From the Back Cover
Let's get down to a practical implementation of SSL and TLS

SSL/TLS is a standardized, widely implemented, peer-reviewed protocol for applying cryptographic primitives to arbitrary networked communications. It provides privacy, integrity, and a measure of authenticity to otherwise inherently untrustworthy network connections.

While most books detail the protocol, this one is intended to provide you with a nearly complete SSL/TLS library, developed incrementally using C code. Whether or not you have a working knowledgeof cryptography, you'll find this practical guide helps you understand the internals of these libraries so that, when it comes time to use one, you will have a firm understanding of what takes place at each stage.

  • Understand secure sockets and the HTTP protocol

  • Learn to protect against eavesdroppers with symmetric cryptography

  • Secure key exchanges over an insecure medium with public key cryptography and boost security with elliptic curve cryptography

  • Examine the use of digital signatures and X.509 certificates

  • Develop a usable, secure communications protocol with client-side TLS

  • Add server-side TLS 1.0 support

  • Use SSL in advanced situations, including safely reusing key material with sessionresumption and verifying identity with client authentication

Must read if you want to understand SSL and learn how to use OpenSSL
By Amazon Customer
This book is for S/W engineers or students who want to learn SSL and/or use OpenSSL to integrate SSL into their apps.

That OpenSSL book (Network Security with OpenSSL) doesn't work. It cannot even explain OpenSSL APIs well enough, not to mention SSL. I mean, that book tells you to call API foo() first and then bar() next. But it doesn't tell you why. Given so many complicated data structures and APIs involved, you'd be stuck immediately if you want to do something not covered in the book.

But this book shows you all the real world details about SSL, and how to implement an SSL library. The structure of those SSL APIs implemented is similar to OpenSSL. Concepts involved are the same. From this book, you can learn how those concepts and algorithms are pieced together. That's why you'll know how to use OpenSSL after reading this book.

I find the notes on some SSL history across the book are also very useful. These facts are hard to find, and usually not mentioned in formal documents. It helps you understand why SSL works like this today.

Salute to the author !

Excellent tutorial and reference on TLS.
By Martin Duke
As a networking professional, I've long known of many SSL and TLS terms and concepts, but had little idea of how these all fit together. This was the perfect book for me.

The book does a nice job of laying out each of the capabilities that TLS needs to do its job, explains terms, and gets into the details of how things work. Davies includes it all of the C code to implement TLS, so if the text is ever unclear you can refer to the code to understand exactly what he means. His writing is good enough that I rarely had to do this.

If you are interested in cryptographic theory, the math of why an encryption algorithm works the way it does, this is not the book for you. Otherwise, this is an excellent primer and reference on all the key concepts on TLS. I'm hopeful Davies will publish a revised edition when TLS 1.3 is finalized in the next year or two.

The perfect "by programmers, for programmers" book
By Ross Canning
This book explains a very complex topic (SSL) in a clear, step-by-step fashion.

As well as examining the cryptographic protocols themselves, the author explains the background reasons and history behind their design. He isn't afraid to get into the complex details, but he always stays focused on what's important: designing and implementing SSL. When explaining elliptic curve cryptography, for example, he briefly summarizes the esoteric maths that underlie it - enough to wet your appetite, if you're interested in that kind of thing - but then concentrates on how to actually implement ECC in code.

The author's writing style is friendly, informal and very readable. Even the grammar is near-flawless.

The author provides clear, well-thought-out sample code for everything - right there in the book. No having to download code from a broken link!

Amazing as usual
By Mary Christine Bassett
I LOVE Debra Dunbar and this series so much! I finished this book in less than 1 day because I couldn't put it down. I re-read the others in the Imp series in preparation for the release of Exodus. Sam is one bad ass Imp (and ok maybe my dream persona). I highly recommend this book and this series to all book lovers, or Hel even book likers. Just don't mess with my bacon and I want a Little Red of my very own.

Poor Sam just can't catch a break.
By Ryan
I loved this one. Book 7 was a bit underwhelming, but this one really brought it home.

Sam has really become the Rodney Dangerfield of the supernatural world. Nobody respects her, not even humans. Aaru is at war and the elves are making their move on the humans of Earth. Sam stands against it all doing her utmost to stand between the humans and those that would oppress them. We really begin to see the shades of gray at every level: not all angels are benevolent, not all demons are malevolent, the elves oppress their own as much as they oppress the humans.

I love how Sam has evolved over the series from a selfish troublemaker to selfless defender. I'm starting to wonder if she'll eventually become an archangel to fully replace Samael.

Highly recommended.
By John Harris
A really entertaining series. I delayed picking up one of a favourite author's new books in preference to completing this series as it sucked me into a black hole from which I did not want to escape. The characters, especially "Cockroach", the plots and humour, always important, make this a worth while addition to anyone's library, virtual or otherwise. The original overview on Amazon for Book #1 Imp does not do it justice as I have repeatedly perused it without being tacking the plunge. Shame on me - I deprived myself of a wonderful series. Not anymore - after finishing Book #1, I bought the rest and binge read them and now can't wait for Book #9 and hopefully more to follow. Now for the prequels.

Games of Strategy (Second Edition), by Avinash K. Dixit, Susan Skeath

Now available in a Second Edition, Games of Strategy remains the most accessible principles-level text for courses in game theory, addressing a remarkably broad range of concepts in a narrative that is both clear and compelling. Using resonant real-world examples, the authors simplify difficult theoretic ideas, helping students see the value of strategic thinking in a variety of situations.

The text has been carefully updated for this Second Edition, including thorough revisions of the sections on sequential- and simultaneous-move games and those on voting and auctioning.

This is an inviting introduction to game theory, offering students an engaging, comprehensive view of the discipline without assuming a prior knowledge of economics or complex mathematics (uses only high school algebra). Additionally, instructors will find a variety of useful pedagogical tools in the accompanying Instructor’s Manual, including student exercises and suggested classroom games and experiments.

too wordy, but decent problem sets
By Ethan Roberts
A decent book, but too wordy. Game theory lends itself to mathematical explanation, and Dixit tends to use words instead. Lots of them. Maybe this works for some readers, but it didn't for me. I would prefer more normal and extensive form set-ups, with numbers and maths to explain.

The problems are at a good level. They're challenging enough to push the reader, but not so hard as to be discouraging.

good nontechnical introduction
By Grouchy Smurf
This textbook is a good nontechnical introduction. To understand the intended audience, you need to read the preface of this book. the authors intended this book to be a textbook for freshmen and sophomore who are not in a particular discipline yet. Therefore, (1) the book is intended for that level, and (2) it takes a non-disciplinary approach, in the sense that it is not written for economics, or political science or business majors per se. Instead it is written for all of them, but in a more general way. Also, the authors say the book sort of replaced 'thinking strategically' by Dixit and Nalebuff, since the latter was more of a trade book, not a textbook. Therefore, owning both books could be a bit redundant, but it could also offer a nice pairing and complement each other.
If you are looking for a mathematical approach, this is probably not the book for you. If you know nothing about game theory and just want to read up on it, go with 'thinking strategically' instead of this because this is a textbook. If you want a relatively non-technical introduction as part of a course or for self-study, or if you have another textbook that you find too technical, this would be a good book for you.

Excellent introduction to game theory
By Amina Tarina
This is a fantastic introduction to game theory. I'm in a graduate-level game theory course with a much more confusing textbook, and this one has enabled me to learn the concepts more clearly. Once I study the text and examples in Dixit & Skeath, I'm comfortable moving on to the harder problems in my other text. I definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in learning game theory -- you'll even get a few good laughs out of some of the examples and the authors' jokes.

Do not use electronic version as a class text book
By Keith MacKenzie
The information in the book is presented well, clear, easy to understand. The book itself is good. My low review comes from the format. I bought the kindle version as a textbook for class, and for that purpose it is almost useless. There is no linked table of content, not page numbers, only the basic location feature. It works fine as a reference but is almost useless in class because it's almost impossible to find a specific location in the book. If your professor gives you an assignment to read pages 101-150, for example, you will need to find a print copy, see what is in the page, then scroll through the kindle book to find that location. Fix this and you'll have a great e-text book.

Great book!!!
By Paige's Amazon life
This book is a must-have for ANY teacher or prospective teacher. I am an English Education major but I am also a music teacher, and this book has provided me with wonderful insight for some of my students.

The key terms are bolded and off to one side, which is a bonus for any college student. The summaries at the end of each chapter are comprehensive and adequate. Not only that, but the book is extremely easy to read even if you don't understand things like Public Laws or state curriculum. It also provides additional resources for every single chapter.

Overall, well written, interesting and insightful. The price on Amazon is also very fair, you can't buy this cheaper anywhere else.

She used it about 3 times a week and thought it had some good information. However
By HoosierBuddy
I bought this as a gift to my girlfriend's online class. She used this book during her online quizzes and she did quite well. She used it about 3 times a week and thought it had some good information. However, some of the questions posted on the online quiz was more appropriate for an earlier version. Regardless, it didn't have any effect and was still a good product.

Important Premise
By Phil Simon
Disclaimer: I received a review copy from the publisher.
****
I enjoyed Business Model Innovation Factory because of its premise. With the speed of business becoming faster every day (largely due to vast technological changes), I believe that large organizations will need to "pivot" more than once. Ditto CIOs. I just don't see too many companies remaining stagnant if they expect to survive.

Kaplan does a good job at laying out the case for innovation. As another reviewer has pointed out, "Saul sets the stage by explaining how disruption is becoming a commonplace, innovation a necessity and the inadequacy of product and service innovation to drive the system level transformative change that industrial crises require. At the same time, the book respects bot the need for context and plain speaking." I couldn't agree more. The premise of this book is sound and, to be sure, the book's concept would not have been as essential 20 years ago.

I laughed when I read that the official language for one of his projects was English (read: not consultantspeak). To that end, Kaplan writes well and sans jargon--always a plus for me in a business book.

So, what could this book have done better?

I have three main gripes. I would have preferred to see a longer book with more detailed case studies. Second, to my liking, Kaplan makes far too many references to his halcyon days at Accenture. The way he would tell it, this is the perfect consulting organization and it just seems a little to idyllic for me. I have yet to come across a perfect consultancy and I've been in the field for a long time. Further, there seems to be a bevy of plugs for his own company, making the book at times read like a marketing brochure.

Think big, Start small, Scale fast
By James Hamar
"A business model is a story about how an organization creates, delivers and captures value." Simple enough right? It is this same thoughtful, yet direct commentary that makes this book so entertaining for a business model novice like myself.

I do not consider myself an innovator, nor am I an innovation junkie. Yet while reading this book, I began to identify with so many of the points Saul makes about creating value with passion, connecting to unusual suspects that are outside of your industry, and not being afraid to take an honest look at yourself and transform not only the way you operate as an organization, but also as an individual.

I rarely read business books, and to me, this doesn't feel like one. It is an inspiring collection of insights and stories to help you get better at what you do. There is always a better way, and thankfully there are books like this to question if you are doing all you can to become a Business Model Innovation Factory.

Maybe to much text
By Michael Moradiellos
HI,
I've read the book with a lot of expectation due to the work of Saul Kaplan and the BIF but I've the sensation that he repeat to much the exact sentences in different parts of the book, like copy paste. It is really ennnoying and give the sensation to be back in the book.
Also he present some ideas on cities as Innovation Hubs like something extraordinary (10 pages) and it is not. I was looking more for information about how it works and some successful case.

I have the feeling that the same content in half book could be enough.
Thanks.

The Last Anniversary: A Novel, by Liane Moriarty

From Liane Moriarty, author of #1 New York Times bestsellers The Husband’s Secret and Big Little Lies, comes an unforgettable novel defined by her signature sharp wit, page-turning storyline, and lovable and eccentric characters.

Sophie Honeywell always wondered if Thomas Gordon was the one who got away. He was the perfect boyfriend, but on the day he was going to propose, she broke his heart. A year later he married his travel agent, while Sophie has been mortifyingly single ever since. Now Thomas is back in her life because Sophie has unexpectedly inherited his aunt Connie's house on Scribbly Gum Island—home of the famously unsolved Munro Baby mystery.

Sophie moves onto the island and begins a new life as part of an unconventional family, where it seems everyone has a secret. Grace, a beautiful young mother, is feverishly planning a shocking escape from her perfect life. Margie, a frumpy housewife, has made a pact with a stranger, while dreamy Aunt Rose wonders if maybe it's about time she started making her own decisions.

As Sophie's life becomes increasingly complicated, she discovers that sometimes you have to stop waiting around—and come up with your own fairy-tale ending.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Moriarty (Three Wishes) presents a stunner several shades darker than typical chick lit, about a family and the outsider who inherits a house on Scribbly Gum, their (fictional) Australian island and a popular tourist destination. Sophie Honeywell hasn't heard from ex-boyfriend Thomas Gordon since she broke his heart three years ago. He's since married and fathered a child, while Sophie remains single, pining for a baby. When Thomas's Aunt Connie leaves her house on Scribbly Gum Island to Sophie, the family is largely nonplussed—but then, they're used to mysteries. The famous 1932 discovery of baby Enigma by Connie and her sister, Rose Doughty, led to the successful "Munro Baby Mystery" tour that kept the sisters afloat for years. Among the large, eccentric family, Sophie starts a new life, befriending Thomas's cousin Grace, who is suffering through postpartum depression; finding a dangerous mutual attraction with Grace's husband, Callum; and dealing with bitter, intense Veronika, Thomas's sister, who covets Connie's house. Moriarty expertly handles a large cast and their relationships, keeping everyone guessing as the true story of baby Enigma—and its role in Sophie's strange inheritance—is slowly revealed. Moriarty's prose turns from funny through poignant to frightening in an artful snap. (June)

From Booklist
Three years after Sophie Honeywell dumped Thomas Gordon right before he planned to propose, Sophie is bequeathed the house of his widowed aunt Connie on tiny Scribbly Island, site of the Munro baby mystery, just off the coast of Sydney. Thomas is the grandson of that baby, named Enigma after she was found in 1932 by sisters Connie and Rose Doughty, who raised her after her parents abruptly disappeared and turned the mystery into a profitable tourist attraction. Sophie, who at 39 hears the ticking of her biological clock getting louder, is delighted with the house, despite some family opposition to her inheriting it, and intrigued by Connie's matchmaking from beyond the grave. Moriarty has created a cast of appealing characters that she deftly juggles through various plot threads, notably Sophie's languishing love life and the mystery itself, previously revealed only to family members when they turned 40, ultimately revealed to all. With its unhappy childhoods, postpartum depression, and planned suicide, this is less frothy than the author's chick-lit debut Three Wishes (2004) but just as brisk and witty. Michele Leber

Not bad but not nearly as enjoyable as her other books
By Christina Rickman
I think Liane Moriarty is a great author and I love her other books, but I was disappointed by this one. I still enjoyed reading it (hence the 3 stars), but it didn't captivate me the way her other books did.

The characters in this story lacked dimension and there were too many of them! I usually enjoy stories that are told from multiple points-of-view, but there were entirely too many characters in this story to keep track of. I actually had to draw a family tree of the characters so that I could keep them straight.

Because there were so many of them, none of them seemed all that interesting or sympathetic and I didn't really care about their fate, with the exception of one or two. In addition to the lack of multi-dimensional characters, the mystery isn't much of a mystery... it's pretty obvious from the beginning that the sisters had more to do with the disappearances than they let on, and the author alludes to this early on. The story behind the disappearance actually ends up being quite interesting, but you don't read about until the last few pages. The majority of the book is spent describing random events in a group of irritating characters' lives.

I still think LM is a great author, and her style of writing is easy and entertaining to read, so I don't regret buying this book. I didn't think her writing was quite as sharp in this book as in her others, but there were still enough moments where her wit and insight shone through to make it an enjoyable read.

In conclusion:
-If you LOVE Liane Moriarty and have read all her other books, go ahead and read this one because it's not a bad way to pass a few afternoons.
-If you were unsure about her other books, don't bother with this one. You'll be upset you wasted your money so move on to a different author!
-If you have never read one of her books, I highly suggest you do, but don't start with this one because it's by far the weakest.

It’s only 3 weeks into 2016 and I just read my favorite book of the year–I think. Well, how can you not love a book that starts out like this?

‘Do you really think we can get away with it?’
‘If I didn’t think so, I wouldn’t be suggesting it, would I?’
‘We could go to jail. That’s my third worst fear. First funnel-webs, then childbirth, then jail.’
‘Neither of us is going to jail, you ninny. One day we’ll be sweet little old ladies and we’ll probably forget that it didn’t happen the way we said it did.’
‘I can’t imagine us as sweet little old ladies.’
‘It does seem unlikely.’

In this one chapter you have mystery, danger, humor and friendship. The novel centers around a mysterious (fake) island called Scribbly Gum Island where in 1932, during the depression, a baby is found alone in a house with a kettle boiling on the stove and a marble cake sitting out. The parents of the baby, Alice and Jack Munro, are missing. Then it fast forward to the present day and all the ramifications from this event. Some people benefited nicely, while others suffered.

The author does an amazing job of introducing each character. Although Sophie Honeywell and her love-life or lack there of, is the “main” character. The novel is told in third person omniscient point of view and believe me when I tell you, each character is richly developed.

Subjects include: Postpartum depression, mystery, sex, body issues, murder and vibrators. Hey, how can you go wrong?

This novel is worth reading alone for the inner and outer dialogue that goes on with Sophie. Which is absolutely hysterical. Not to mention Margie and her two men named Ron which again, is priceless.

Will the great mystery be solved? Will Sophie find true love that her Aunt Connie predicted her once she moves into the house where it all began? You’ll just have read it to find out.

Published first in 2005 & again in 2014, this is a steal for only $1.99 on kindle. Oh, and add the audio immersion reading to hear the actors speak with Australian accents.

Satisfying as well as Entertaining
By Peggy M
I found this book a fulfilling read. It is entertaining, with twists here & there. More importantly I found it thoughtful and thought provoking. In other words, it is far more than entertaining, making it a worthwhile endeavor. Liane is obviously an astute observer of people and human behavior. Often, I had an ah-ha moment, sometimes reinforcing my own opinions and often causing me to scratch my head and to bank that thought for more consideration. The story line is interesting. I found the character development even more intriguing and believable. So happy to "discover" Liane Moriarty and have already purchased another book authored by her.

My least favorite chapter book to date
By Sharon
I read this book to my two 6 year olds because it was on the 2012-2013 Pennsylvania Young Reader's Choice for K-3. I would NOT recommend this book to other parents of young children. I should preface by saying that my children enjoyed the book and want to read the sequel. However, I was quite disappointed in the book, and in particular, its treatment of gender and of bullying.

First gender: Throughout the book EllRay makes sweeping statements about "girls do this, but boys don't" or the reverse. There is never any attempt to disprove these statements or show the similarities between boys and girls. It was so glaring that my 6 year old son finally said, "I don't like that he keeps saying, girls are like this, boys are like that."

The second issue is how bullying was treated. EllRay is bullied throughout the book, but never comes up with a good resolution. Although the teachers and parents suspect it, he never tells them. He keeps it a secret throughout the book, and never enlists adult help. In the end, the resolution is that there is a fight, broken up by other kids (kind of) and then the parents take EllRay and the bully to Disneyland together. There is never the message that he should talk to grownups about what is happening, or that grownups can be helpful in such situations. Not every book has to have a moral, but you'd hope not to read young children that have messages you DON"T want to teach them.

A fighting chance
By E. R. Bird
Quiz time. Place your books under your desks and bring out your #2 pencils. Everyone ready? All right. Reach back into your brain cells and please name for me all the great contemporary early chapter books that you can think of that star male African-American protagonists. Heck, let's make it even more interesting than that. Name me such a book but NOT any of Sharon Draper's Ziggy and the Black Dinosaurs or any of Ann Cameron's Julian books. You have thirty seconds . . . go.

Now if you're anything like me, the above quiz is near impossible. You're either going to try to justify full-length chapter books like The Toothpaste Millionaire as early chapter books (it ain't) or you'll try to bring up books that have historical characters like Eric Kimmel's Louie Armstrong in A Horn for Louis. While we've seen a nice and healthy (if still insufficient) increase in early chapter books starring black girls (Sunny, Dyamonde Daniel, Sassy, Anna Hibiscus, Nikki & Deja, etc.) the boys have been left out in the cold. This is a ridiculous gap in our literary marketplace and it leaves librarians like myself more than a little baffled. I half want to track Christopher Paul Curtis down to his home and scream in his ear, "Why aren't you doing anything about this!?!?" That's hardly fair, though. If publishers were actively seeking out such fare, it would be published. Into this veritable wasteland walks EllRay Jakes. He's not perfect, but he's fun, funny, and a start. And sometimes, that's all it takes.

Ever since Christmas Break things have been tough for EllRay. For the first part of the third grade year he existed below the radar when it came to bullies like Jared Matthews and his sidekick Stanley. Recently, however, EllRay has become the target for the bully's wrath and he has no idea why. Worse still, his dad is unimpressed with EllRay's near heroic (if failed) attempts not to get in trouble at school. So when EllRay's dad says that if EllRay stays out of trouble for a whole week he can go to Disneyland, the challenge is on! Of course, it's hard to stay focused when you're trying the hide the fact that you're being bullied. Harder still when that bully wants you in a fair fight after school for once and for all.

Sally Warner has a way with words. No stranger to the early chapter book series world (her Lily and Emma books come immediately to mind) I was pleased that she stepped a bit out of her comfort zone with EllRay here. She makes sure to give him all the good lines, which is important when you're dealing with a kid as charmingly flawed as he. For example, upon viewing a fellow classmate he says, "Cynthia is the cleanest person I have ever known. She is strangely clean." I love that phrase, "strangely clean." Of course, the setting is strictly suburban. It was interesting to me to note that EllRay's story takes place in a school in Southern California where he's one of the few black kids in his class. He explains at one point that everyone in his class is essentially white, "except for me, Kevin, and two very quiet girls who go to the same church, not mine." There are plenty of kids in the country in similar situations, but of course this means that EllRay's problems are strictly suburban problems. If you're looking for tales set in cities, seek ye elsewhere.

I was impressed with the characters here too. The bad guys are bullies with reasons. Our hero often doth protest too much, and often the reader can see it. And Alfie, EllRay's little sister, could easily have fallen in the too-cute-to-be-believed void of literary little sisters. Instead, her worst flaw is that she has a cute lisp. This, thankfully, is used well. For example, when Alfie announces her intention to meet Minnie Mouse in Disneyland, her parents warn her that Minnie might not be there. " `I'll meet her, all wight,' Alfie says grimly." Four-year-olds who speak grimly are my weakness. I have a hard time not finding them funny.

This book was originally titled EllRay Fights Back then was changed later to the more innocuous sounding EllRay Jakes is Not a Chicken. The switcheroo makes more sense when you get near the end of the book and the unprecedented happens: Our hero decides to fight out his problems with the class bully . . . and then does! I've seen books like this play out the same situation over and over and inevitably the hero never comes to blows. The fact that EllRay does and then solves his problem through far more amicable means later is extraordinary. Undoubtedly there will be concerned adults who read this book and decide that it praises fighting as a way of solving your problems. Not a bit of it. The charm of EllRay is that child readers can see right through him. Early in the book he's told to figure out what Jared's problem is with him. He doesn't, things escalate, and kid readers are left feeling that if he'd just manned up and discussed (or even yelled) the matter over with Jared then everything would have wound up better. As it stands, things seem pretty good anyway. You never see EllRay punished for fighting (another rarity) and yet things wrap up due to some unexpected bonding. It's a realistic ending that doesn't pander to the usual early chapter book conventions. Huh.

EllRay Jakes is Not a Chicken is just the first in a long line of EllRay Jakes books to come. I do think that there's room to expand and grow here as well. My hope, above all, is that EllRay paves the way for other books about other present day African-American boys. Preferably short, funny stories like these that give kids new heroes to grapple with. Writing such books isn't easy, but I've always felt that aside from easy readers, early chapter titles are the hardest and most rewarding books to make for kids. And rewarding isn't a bad word to use in conjunction with EllRay here. Better check him out.

Brave EllRay
By Madigan McGillicuddy
Eight year-old Lancelot Raymond, better known as EllRay, is eager to prove that despite his small size, he is not a chicken. When he's bullied by some boys at school, rather than alerting his parents or other authority figures, he decides to "take it like a man" and suffer alone.

There were a number of things that I liked about this novel. Lots of interesting details about EllRay and his family made this early middle-grade realistic fiction novel feel very well developed. EllRay likes Mondays and he likes making lists. He doesn't understand girls. His younger sister is named Alfleta, meaning "beautiful elf" in Saxon, but goes by Alfie for short. His geology professor father seems caring but stern. While the adults can't seem to figure out what's going on, they can tell that things aren't quite right. Being promised a trip to Disneyland if he can have an "incident-free" week at school encourages EllRay to keep things under wraps more than ever. My heart broke for this poor kid, who felt such pressure, at such a young age. I liked that this was a "boy" book, featuring a relatively happy African-American family.

Unfortunately, I can't recommend this book wholeheartedly, as I did have some problems with it. While I loved the cover, I was very disappointed by the interior illustrations. In them, EllRay looks bug-eyed and two-dimensional. The ending of the book left much to be desired. As things grow to a head between EllRay and bullies Jared and Stanley, EllRay finally takes matters into his own hands, meeting Jared for a fistfight. This manages to clear the air, but both boys are disappointed when it's revealed that their parents have conspired to send them to Disneyland... where they'll be forced to hang out together. I didn't think a namby-pamby, "And then the boys all learned to be friends! And they lived happily ever after!" sort of ending would have made any sense, but I was saddened that violence seemed to be the answer to EllRay's problems, and that the adults in the story remained clueless throughout. The final third of the book really dragged for me... I kept picking it up, reading a sentence and putting it down again, meaning this short book took me over a month to read. The book is appended with a sneak peek chapter from the next book in the series. For me, this made an already choppy ending feel even choppier, but for kids who liked the book, that sneak peek chapter will provide reassurance that more of EllRay's adventures are on the way. I did enjoy this book. And I'll certainly recommend it to kids looking for good realistic fiction featuring African American families. It doesn't replace the special place that The Stories Julian Tells holds in my heart, though.
