a wonderful insight, horrible binding.

i think this book goes some ways into showing people that not only was rozz a very talented musician, but his best work was done with audial and visual arts. if you do buy this book be forewarned that it is obviously not just a few of these books that fall apart. it seems to be all of them, so if you don't want to keep re-ordering this book, then plan to spend a few dollars on rebinding it. the origonal binding seems to be some cheap foam-like glue. myself and my wife are having ours hardbound for around $60. very good investment though. if you are interested in surrealist art or the music and artistic endeavors of mr. williams this book will not in any way dissappoint.

The Book of Rozz

This book is an excellent source for anyone who wants to remember Rozz Williams, to learn more about this pioneering artist, or to understand the origins of Christian Death. The book has sections on each of Rozz's musical projects and includes pictures, lyrics, and brief background information for each era, as well as poems, mixed-media collages, and a pretty good discography that includes many imports and singles.

Secret newsreel, prepare communication

First I should mention... the book did fall apart upon first viewing and now everytime I look at it I have to be extremely careful and alert at how the book is being handled. However, when one gets past this sorry state of affairs regarding the fragility of the book, one can not help but be impressed by its content: photo's, artwork, gig flyers, poetry, lyrics, commentary, tour dates, release dates. Indeed Nico B has put together as complete a package of Rozz Williams brief life possible. Any fan of Rozz Williams the artist would be pleased with this book which displays the creative genius and abilities of the man impeccably

"We tried to provide the reader with a richness of theory, a richness of practice, and a strong basis for linkage between the two. We rejected the strictly case study approach, which leaves theory out altogether, or soft-pedals it, and thereby denies the accumulated benefits of many years of careful research and thought about management processes. We also rejected an alternate approach that forces on readers a highly rationalistic model of how the strategy process should function. We collaborated on this book because we believe that in this complex world of organizations a range of concepts is needed to cut through and illuminate particular aspects of that complexity.

There is no 'one best way' to create strategy, nor is there 'one best form' of organization. Quite different forms work well in particular contexts. We believe that exploring a full variety systematically will create a deeper and more useful appreciation of the strategy process. In this revised edition, we remain loyal to these beliefs and objectives."

About the Author

Henry Mintzberg is Cleghorn Professor of Management Studies at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. His research has dealt with issues of general management and organizations, focusing on the nature of managerial work, forms of organizing, and the strategy formation process. Currently, he is completing a book about Developing Managers, not MBAs, and a pamphlet entitled Getting Past Smith and Marx . . . Towards a Balanced Society. He is also promoting the development of a family of masters programs for practicing managers. His own teaching activities focus on ad hoc seminars for managers and work with doctoral students.

He received his doctorate and master of science degrees from the M.LT. Sloan School of Management and his mechanical engineering degree from McGill, working in between in operational research for the Canadian National Railways. He has recently been named an Officer of the Order of Canada and of l'Ordre Nationale du Quebec and holds honorary degrees from thirteen universities. He also served as President of the Strategic Management Society from 1988 to 1991, and is an elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada (the first from a management faculty), the Academy of Management, and the International Academy of Management. He was named Distinguished Scholar for the year 2000 by the Academy of Management.

Joseph Lampel is Professor of Strategy at City University Business School, London. He received his doctorate in Strategic Management from McGill University in 1990, and was awarded Best Dissertation Award from the Administrative Science Association of Canada. Following his graduate studies Professor Lampel taught for seven years at the Stern School of Business, New York University. He subsequently moved to the United Kingdom where her held positions at University of St. Andrews and the University of Nottingham. Professor Lampel is the coauthor of The Strategy Safari with Henry Mintzberg and Bruce Ahalstrand. He has published extensively on strategy in management journals, and his articles have also appeared in the Financial Times and Fortune Magazine.

James Brian Quinn. Professor Quinn is a recognized authority in the fields of strategic planning, management of technological change, entrepreneurial innovation, and management of intellect and technology in the services sector. He has received both the Academy of Management's prestigious Outstanding Educator Award and its Book of the Year award (for Intelligent Enterprise).

Sumantra Ghoshal is Professor of Strategic and International Management at the London Business School. He also serves as the Founding Dean of the Indian School of Business in Hyderabad, of which LBS is a partner, and as a member of The Committee of Overseers of the Harvard Business School. Managing Across Borders: The Transnational Solution, a book he coauthored with Christopher Bartlett, has been listed in the Financial Times as one of the 50 most influential management books and has been translated into nine languages. The Differentiated Network: Organizing the Multinational Corporation for Value Creation, a book he coauthored with Nitin Nohria, won the George Terry Book Award in 1997. The Individualized Corporation, coauthored with Christopher Bartlett, won the Igor Ansoff Award in 1997, and has been translated into seven languages. His last book, Managing Radical Change, won the Management Book of the Year award in India. With doctoral degrees from both the MIT School of Management and the Harvard Business School, Sumantra serves on the editorial boards of several academic journals and has been nominated to the Fellowships at the Academy of Management, the Academy of International Business, and the World Economic Forum.

The Strategy Process

The authors of "The Strategy Process..", produced a high quality textbook on strategic planning and management. The authors show the complexity of the subject and the need for managers to exercise caution in using prescriptive systems in the highly dynamic, uncertain and complex operating environment. The book avoids taking a simplistic view to the subject but take a realistic approach of presenting various approaches that managers can use depending on their peculiar circumstances. Having grasped the various concepts, leaders of organisations can then use their judgement to come up with appropriate decisions and actions. The book focuses on developing the ability of managers to make informed judgements based on analysis, synthesis, experience and intuition and harnessing the collective skills and expertise of their organisations.

The book shows how strategy formulation and implementation are intimately intertwined as complex interactive processes in which politics, values and organisational cultures and management styles determine or constrain particular strategic decisions.

Top managers have to make judgements on various unknown and difficult to predict factors and integrate external considerations about technologies, limited resources, competitions, markets, societal attitudes, cultural differences, government regulations and environmental issues. Internally, they have to make judgements on organisational structures, systems, staff, physical resources, existing and potential power bases and bureaucracies.

The chief executive officer has the challenging task of mediating between the various aspects of the internal and external environment and exercises his skills, judicious exercise of power and often make highly qualitative (rather than quantitative) choices from a wide range of possible options.

The book will enable the reader to understand the wide range of issues involved in strategy.

The book has a wide range of cases and articles that give the reader the opportunity to develop and exercise judgements on strategic issues. The book is recommended reading for those seeking a more in-depth insight into both the theory and practice of strategic management. For students embarking on advanced strategic planning, say at MBA or doctoral level, this is required reading and important reference material.

This book is really a manual of strategies and strategy process. It has lots of cases and articles that give the readers the opportunity to understand different strategic issues arising in different companies.

The book is recommended reading for MBA students and also in many business schools. It is excellent reading for those readers who are looking for more detailed information of strategy process, theory and planning.

decent book

This book is an ok book. The cases are very interesting and they were the best part of the book. The readings in the first half of the book were random at times and generally not that good. Mintzberg has a great grasp of the concepts, but the book does not do well at conveying them.

About the Author

Ramez Elmasri is a professor and the associate chairperson of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Texas at Arlington. He has over 140 refereed research publications, and has supervised 16 PhD students and over 100 MS students. His research has covered many areas of database manage- ment and big data, including conceptual modeling and data integration, query languages and indexing techniques, temporal and spatio-temporal databases, bioinformatics databases, data collection from sensor networks, and mining/analysis of spatial and spatio-temporal data. He has worked as a consultant to various companies, including Digital, Honeywell, Hewlett Packard, and Action Technologies, as well as consulting with law firms on patents. He was the Program Chair of the 1993 International Conference on Conceptual Modeling (ER conference) and program vice-chair of the 1994 IEEE International Conference on Data Engineering. He has served on the ER conference steering committee and has been on the program committees of many conferences. He has given several tutorials at the VLDB, ICDE, and ER conferences. He also co-authored the book “Operating Systems: A Spiral Approach” (McGraw-Hill, 2009) with Gil Carrick and David Levine. Elmasri is a recipient of the UTA College of Engineering Outstanding Teaching Award in 1999. He holds a BS degree in Engineering from Alexandria University, and MS and PhD degrees in Computer Science from Stanford University.

Shamkant B. Navathe is a professor and the founder of the database research group at the College of Computing, Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta. He has worked with IBM and Siemens in their research divisions and has been a consultant to various companies including Digital, Computer Corporation of America, Hewlett Packard, Equifax, and Persistent Systems. He was the General Co-chairman of the 1996 International VLDB (Very Large DataBase) conference in Bombay, India. He was also program co-chair of ACM SIGMOD 1985 International Conference and General Co-chair of the IFIP WG 2.6 Data Semantics Workshop in 1995. He has served on the VLDB foundation and has been on the steering committees of several conferences. He has been an associate editor of a number of journals including ACM Computing Surveys, and IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering. He also co-authored the book “Conceptual Design: An Entity Relationship Approach” (Addison Wesley, 1992) with Carlo Batini and Stefano Ceri. Navathe is a fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and recipient of the IEEE Computer Science, Engineering and Education Impact award in 2015. Navathe holds a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan and has over 150 refereed publications in journals and conferences.

Great book for grad students, but not for Beginners.

I simply love this book. I agree however that it is VERY theoretical, VERY abstract at times, and VERY mathematical.
If you want a great book on general database theory, This is for you. I would have loved to see some more diagrams on the relational algebra chapters though.

For the following section, please bear in mind that i am not expert in the DBA field. I'm a AP graduate, who loves database technology.

* Autodidacts who already know how to access Databases from Java or C#, wanting to learn more.

Worst text that I have had thus far!

I had to have this textbook for a Database Design course and I found the book to be horrible. Not in the sense of incorrect grammar but as a source of educating and being able to refer to as a learning tool. I found the text to be very hard to read taking me about as twice as long to read each chapter as compared to most technical textbooks that I have had in the past. Chapters seem to just start talking about one thing, then moves onto another thing, and then returns back to the original topic. But to sum it all up, I would only recommend this textbook towards enemy's as a punishment because it made my life pretty much hell throughout this course. I would expect a little better quality for $150.00.

I wouldn't buy it unless I had to.

The title of this book suggests that it is merely the basics; don't be fooled. This book goes far beyond the fundamentals. It is over 1,000 pages of "stuff". It is used for graduate school classes in database design. I won't bore the reader with complex theories and jargon. In short, don't buy this book unless it is required for a school course. This book will only be of use if you are attending graduate school or in search of a PhD.

If you are looking to understand how to build tables, define the relationship between tables, how to load data into a database, how to query the database of information, and simply desire a good foundation is the true "fundamentals" of database design then I recommend "The Practical SQL Handbook" by Judith Bowman and it's companion "Practical SQL the Sequel". These books will provide a better and more thorough understanding of the application of database design in terms you can understand and it leaves out the theoretical, discrete math, set theory "stuff".

Available for the first time in English, Ayatsuji's debut novel was first published in Japan in 1987, the same year as the debut of Paul Halter, another giant of locked room mysteries. Ayatsuji reinvigorates the classical English mysteries of Agatha Christie, Dorothy Sayers, Ellery Queen, and John Dickson Carr by stripping them down to their essentials and examining their moving parts. In this novel, six members of the Kyoto University Mystery Club—each taking the alias of a famous mystery writer—assemble on an abandoned island and take up residence in a decagonally shaped house. Naturally, soon enough the students begin to be killed off, and the race is on to discover the murderer's identity. Meanwhile, back on the mainland, two members of the club who chose not to go receive mysterious letters that lead them to believe that something is afoot on the island. Along with an enthusiastic partner, they set about trying to solve another mystery from years past, which has connections to the island. Ayatsuji leaves no doubts about his intentions, making copious references to Christie's And Then There Were None, and even the characters are well aware that they have stumbled into a work of their favorite type of fiction. The metafictional trappings are good fun, but they wouldn't mean much if the mystery itself wasn't equally fun and tricky. And it is. A Japanese murder mystery masterpiece, finally available for English-speaking mystery fans to enjoy

The Decagon House Murders, written by Yukito Ayatsuji and first published in Japan in 1987, is a beautifully constructed and atmospheric mystery novel. Seven university students, members of their school's Mystery Fiction Club and all nicknamed after famous mystery writers, decide to spend a week on an isolated island writing stories for their club's publication while investigating the remains of a burnt-down mansion where a gruesome quadruple homicide took place six months prior. The group stays in the Decagon House, a guesthouse nearby the mansion's ruins where nearly everything is ten-sided. Naturally, the students begin to get killed one-by-one. Meanwhile, on the mainland, two other students from the university receive morbid letters accusing them of murder. However, the letters' sender is one of the presumed-dead victims of the quadruple homicide case...

This novel is perfect for anyone looking for a highly entertaining and intellectual murder mystery. It is a homage to Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None and ushered in a Japanese boom in fair-play authentic mystery fiction upon its original publication. The English translation is smooth and succeeds in drawing the reader into the mystery. The parallel plot-lines alternate between the students on the island and the students on the mainland, with both groups trying to solve the current and past murder cases of the island. The plotting is well-paced and the clues are cleverly hidden, yet still detectable to a keen mind. The Decagon House Murders is a masterful combination of deductive logic and out-of-the-box critical thinking, all concluding with what the author calls "a colorful shock."

A Japanese "And Then There Were None" that is worthy of Agatha Christie herself.

One of my favorite books which I read over and over when I was in middle school (then it was called "junior high school") was And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie. Although the numerous film versions (usually under the title "Ten Little Indians") which almost invariably have a "happy ending" tacked on it make it seem like a hoary clich� to many people, for me the original book has lost none of its power. Which is probably why I set myself up for disappointment whenever I read a book that deliberately patterns itself after Dame Agatha's masterpiece. Nine Man's Murder by Eric Keith is a wonderful whodunit, but I couldn't believe the characters were suffering the psychological terror I expected. The Ex or You Won't Leave Here Alive (You Won't Leave Here Alive Series Book 1) by Nicholas "Nick" Sanders is a gripping thriller where you can easily believe in the characters' terror---but at the end it's clear he wanted to write a horror story rather than a mystery. The Invisible Circle by Paul Halter had a solution to the locked-room mystery that I had big problems with. But this book had several good reviews and so I decided to give it a try. To say the least, I was very impressed. Is it AS good as ATTWN? No, but I don't think any mystery book can be. It is a great mystery that "gets" Agatha Christie's famous work, and is most worthy of sitting next to it on the bookshelf.

Several kids sail out to an uninhabited island where a series of grisly murders took place six months previously. They're all members of a detective book club in college, and all of them refer to each other by nicknames referring to famous mystery writers---- Agatha [Christie], [John Dickson] Carr, Ellery [Queen], [Gaston] Leroux, [Emma] Orcsy, [Edgar Allen] Poe, and [S.S.] Van [Dyne]. After their first night, they are greeted at breakfast with seven plates labelled "First Victim", "Second Victim", "Third Victim", "Fourth Victim", "Fifth Victim", "Detective", and "Murderer." It seems like a sick practical joke---until the kids start to die. Meanwhile on the mainland, a former member of the detective book club, Kawaminami receives a mysterious letter from the man who used to own that island and who was murdered six months ago. It read "My daughter was MURDERED by all of you." He contacts his buddy Morisu who has also received a similar letter, and soon the two of them are playing detective to find out who sent the letters and the truth about the murder six months ago. Can they find out who's responsible before their friends are all dead on the island?

Considering how well known this story is, I found myself genuinely surprised at the unique twists taken in this book. It's not a coincidence that one of the kids on the island has the nickname "Ellery Queen", because I believe that his work as much as Agatha Christie specifically influenced this novel. Specifically, The Egyptian Cross Mystery. (When characters talk about "this being your typical 'headless corpse'" they are referring to this book.) Also as in Ellery Queen, things which seem to be the act of a homicidal lunatic actually have a very sane reason behind them. At the end, when the murderer and their plans are finally revealed, I think the reader will be as surprised as I was by why things took place. While this is less of a "whodunit" than "Nine Man's Murder" there are clues left which point in the direction of the killer which the astute reader might be able to catch. (I missed them. :( )

It would not be right for me to overlook the work of translator Ho-Ling Wong. He not only had a steep language barrier to overcome to make this book available for English-language readers, but a cultural one as well. For example, when "Ellery" tells two riddle that rely on knowledge of Japanese "kanji" to get the joke, Wong tells a new joke that relies on English wordplay while explaining the original in footnotes. My only quibble with his translation is his decision to render Japanese names with the surname or family name first. I know this is how names are actually written in Japanese, but unlike China, Japanese people usually reverse the names into Western format whenever the names are written or spoken in English. Still, it's a minor quibble. The revelation of the killer is stunning surprise, and Wong formats the book so that this takes place at the very bottom of a page.

Perhaps the best compliment that I can give is that like ATTWN, I found myself still thinking about this book for several days after I finished reading it. Mystery fans should be grateful to Locked Room International publisher John Pugmire for making this available to English-speaking mystery fans. Although it won't be published by him, because of this book I am looking forward to reading "The Tokyo Zodiac Murders" by Soji Shimada which will be republished in English come September. Shimada wrote the introduction to this book.

An excellent translation of a Japanese mystery; well-worth reading!

A group of people is stuck on an island, with no way off. Stuck on the island with them is a mad, cunning killer, determined to pick off the group members one by one. It’s a race against time, a deadly game of cat-and-mouse. No, I’m not talking about Agatha Christie’s "And Then There Were None". Rather, I’m talking about a recently-published translation of a Japanese detective story: "The Decagon House Murders".

The titular Decagon House is, of course, shaped like a decagon, and the island upon which it sits was recently the site of a gruesome series of murders. Naturally, a university’s mystery club (modelled on such a club at Kyoto University) decides the island is a great place for a club excursion. Thus the members meet up, each of them known by a pseudonym taken from one of the great Western Golden Age writers: Agatha, Orczy, Van Dine, Leroux, Ellery, Carr, and Poe. It doesn’t take long for murder to occur, and as the body count rises, the list of suspects gets shorter and shorter…

Locked Room International has become known in recent years for its work in the locked-room/impossible-crime subgenre, especially when it comes to publishing the work of Paul Halter in English. With its publication of Yukito Ayatsuji’s The Decagon House Murders, however, LRI has taken a bit of a different step from the usual. The novel was originally published in Japanese in 1987, and was credited with helping to resurrect the Golden-Age style detective story in Japan (the official term for this being "honkaku"). Another book that helped this resurgence was "The Tokyo Zodiac Murders" by Soji Shimada. Shimada played a big role in the success of Ayatsuji’s book – he promoted it upon its initial publication in Japan, and he now has fittingly written the introduction to this English translation.

This translation comes to you courtesy of Ho-Ling Wong, who must be commended for his translation of The Decagon House Murders – it is eminently readable. The prose style is easily digestible, and it made for really compelling, page-turning reading. I was genuinely excited to get further along in the book.

From what I can tell, Yukito Ayatsuji has minimal interest in character development in this book. What propels the book is the plot, and so the characters are drawn in a few hasty brush strokes. Agatha is the popular, pretty girl. Orczy is the not-so-pretty wallflower who likes to retreat into her inner world of fantasy. Ellery has a brilliant intellect, but is extraordinarily pompous (much like the early incarnations of Ellery Queen in that respect!). And so on. When this style works, I really admire this – you get what you need out of characterization, and no more. What fuels interest is the plot.

And boy, oh boy, is this plot ever a sweet one! "The Decagon House Murders" must deal with the example that Agatha Christie left behind. Simply recycling her ending will not do. Ayatsuji found an excellent way of handling this problem. Simply put, this is a stunner of a plot, with an ending which I simply could not believe when it was first revealed. When I put the book down, I realized that I had just read a book which rivals "The Tokyo Zodiac Murders" for sheer audacity and ingenuity.

Indeed, now that I’ve read it, I have to say that "The Decagon House Murders" is a serious contender for my favourite Japanese mystery. It has everything I want in a mystery. It left me satisfied with what I’d read, and eager to read more. I sincerely hope that this publication signals more to come in English from the Japanese honkaku school – you can count on me being at the front of the line waiting for more books like this.

Great for class!

This question review book is meant to be used with Ruben's Pathology, but I used it with little Robbins and thought it was fantastic. The full-color photos are great, and every question has a very in-depth description for the answer. It is very good for basic pathology, but I would not recommend it as a board-review book, as it is a little too focused on specific details (molecular pathways, specific chemical mediators not otherwise mentioned) for that purpose.

good questions with lots of pictures

I think this is a great pathology review book. Although the explanations to the questions are not as in depth as Robbin's review question book, the thing that separates this book from Robbins is the amount of pictures it has. One of my biggest weaknesses is histology pictures, and this book definitely has plenty. Overall, A great resource to use throughout medical school.

I'm a 2nd year med student. This book provides a good review before med school tests, and I also plan to use it later during Step 1 review. It's well-organized and the questions are high-quality.
