This Complete edition from the Blake Trust, published last year in a Thames and Hudson hardback edition that is now out of print, should replace the b&w-only Dover edition (but not David V. Erdman's commentary therein, or his reading text The Complete Poetry and Prose of William Blake) for any reader. The 366 crisp color and 30 b&w reproductions here, culled from the scholarly Princeton University Press six-volume annotated set, are little short of a revelation, giving us Songs of Innocence, Songs of Experience, America, Milton, Jerusalem and the rest of the Blake canon in a form acceptably close, as Binder's introduction makes clear, to the way Blake wanted us to see them. Many of these works are currently hanging in a special Blake exhibition the largest ever at the Met in New York, for which the Abrams book serves as an informative and revealing catalogue. Hamlyn, a senior curator at London's Tate (where the exhibition originated), and the University of York's Phillips present prints, drawings, paintings, selections from Blake's own illuminated books and other relevant materials, such as snapshots from Blake's marvelous editions of Edward Young's Night Thoughts and Thomas Gray's Poems. Introductory essays from novelist and biographer Peter Ackroyd (Blake; T.S. Eliot) and Marilyn Butler, rector of Oxford's Exeter College, synopsize Blake's life and times, while extensive "label copy" situates each work as presented. While the visual overview is useful and some of the detail shots of larger works are compelling, poetry readers who have to choose will take the Complete.

Fascination Has Its Price

Generally, I enjoy the art works printed by Dover Publishers. For Dore, Grosz, Hogarth, Piranesi there is none out there better.

But volume of Blake's work is worth a price that is triples the rate for anything from Dover.

It is a beautiful publication with perfect color matches to the original. It offers the chance for the reader to deal with the text from the original or to choose much more readable type at the volume's end.

If you want to have a visionary's art and verse handy and home, this is the book to buy

Amazing Collection at a Great Price

The Complete Illuminated Books is a wonderful collection of facsimiles of Blake's original etchings. Because Blake's printings were so limited (sometimes only printed in a single volume and at most printed in 50 volumes)this is as close as anyone will get to experiencing the original prints of William Blake. I highly recommend this book for anyone who appreciates literature, art and their innovative intertwining by a master of both. A beautiful volume and an incredible value!

the original illuminated books

This beautiful paperback volume consists of high quality reproductions of Blake's original illustrated books. It is an incredible bargain. The pictures are powerful and Blake intended the pictures and the texts to illumine each other. I've never disciplined myself to sit down and read the text from the engraved script; its not easy or natural since the print on many plates is small and faint; but it would be worth the effort. However, there is a type face version of all the poems in the back, to refer to when needed to make out a word. This is an essential book for anyone seeking to understand Blake's profound prophetic vision more deeply.

A reminder that life's a joy

This is such an unusual book: a pictorial monologue about a year in author/illustrator Maira Kalman's life, in which she tackles issues like life, death, family, history, travel, food and all the big philosophical questions of existence.
It has more than 300 pages, almost all of them with quirky Magritte-style illustrations that are often as humorous and charming as the text.
Maira Kalman's Jewish family fled Russia after the revolution and went to Palestine before settling in America. As I imagine many of those do whose families have endured lives fractured by the events of history, and so closely touched by atrocities like the Holocaust, Kalman seems never to take life for granted -- she often expresses her concern about the point of it all, and the mess so many people make of it.
But for all that, this book is imbued with Kalman's overriding and utter joy in being alive. Joy shines out of every page.
For example, while she's in Israel she writes of her despair about the embattled state of the Middle East, but once back home in New York she finds immediate reassurance and an antidote to her distress simply by observing the life on the streets -- the colours, the people, the eccentricities, the humanity of it all.
On other pages she'll share her delight in wonderful hats, bravely-dressed women, old people, the collections of weird objects she keeps at home, and many of the amazing sights she observes and records on her travels at home and abroad.
I'd love to meet her: from my reading I imagine a strong New York humour and an infectious fascination for the cities she loves.

Maira Is Forever

I can't believe that there have only been two reviews of this book! It is a Maira Kalman book for grownups - for anyone who loves her childrens books - the wit, the art, the words - finally there is a picture book for us!
And, for a short period of time, the original paintings are on view at Julie Saul Gallery on 22nd St. in NYC. What a bonus!

In Principles of Uncertainty, Kalman touches on nearly every human emotion - yielding a book that is tender, tough, ironic, big-picture, "God is in the details", mellow, poignant, funny - you name it. In her deceptively naive paintings, she captures the essence of things - relationships, beauty, life cycles.

I went to see the exhibition at Julie Saul two times - and I would have gone 200 times. This will be one of those books that we will return to over and over again.

Zen-like meditations on the magnificent and the mundane

Kalman's illustrations accentuate her pithy prose. Her pictures seem derived from some other time, perhaps the Impressionist era in France? They have a 19th century vibe. Think Van Gogh. Imagine Monet.

Her thoughts spring from the page as she passes through her days. Each thought evokes a picture. In her observation of a life that is mostly "normal" (if there is such a thing) Kalman connects readers with the deep reservoirs of personal feeling that we frequently fail to recognize.

This is a lovely, one-of-a-kind volume that will delight as it subtly conjures up the emotions that lie just below the surface in every one of us. Bravo!

Strategies for Preparing for LEED AP BD+C ExamThere are several strategies for preparing for LEED AP BD+C Exam:

1. Bare bone strategy:
This strategy is bold, risky, but effective, low cost, and takes the least amount of time. You can spend about two weeks to prepare and pass the exam:

a. Download and read the latest candidate handbook for LEED AP BD+C Exam
b. Study the FREE PDF files listed at the end of the latest candidate handbook for LEED AP BD+C Exam (About 20% to 30% of the test content will come from these materials).
c. Study my books, LEED v4 BD&C Exam Guide and LEED v4 BD&C Mock Exam (Covers the fundamental and most important information of the remaining 70% to 80% of test content will come from these materials).
d. Do NOT buy or read the USGBC reference guide AT ALL

Pros:
a. Save time and money and still have a good chance of passing. In fact, a number of my readers did pass the exam using this approach.
b. You can prepare and pass the exam in about two weeks.

Cons:
a. Your score may not be as high as you want since you COMPLETELY skip the USGBC reference guide (probably range from 170 to 180).
b. You may feel nervous during the real exam. You may swear that you fail in the exam, and end up passing. You may have no clue why you pass but I know why you pass the exam though: my books cover the fundamental and most important information of the exam and set up a solid foundation for your LEED knowledge.

2. Middle of the road strategy:
This strategy is exactly the same as bare bone strategy, except that you do the following extra things:

a. Buy or read portion of the USGBC reference guide to supplement my two books:
Only refer to or read the USGBC reference guide for items you have questions, or for detailed information not covered by my books such as the "Behind the Intent" and "Step-by-Step Guidance" Sections and Calculations. I skip these sections in my book, LEED v4 BD&C Exam Guide because it takes too much time for you to read the information, and I think you should be able to handle most of the tasks covered in these sections if you MASTER the other sections.
b. Do a few extra sets of mock exams.

Pros:
a. Save time and money and still have an excellent chance of passing. In fact, many readers did pass the exam using this approach.
b. You can prepare and pass the exam in about two to four weeks.

Cons:
a. Your score may not be as high as you want (probably range from 170 to 185).
b. You may still feel nervous during the real exam.


3. Comprehensive strategy:
This strategy is exactly the same as bare bone strategy, except that you do the following extra things:

a. Buy or read the USGBC reference guide from cover to cover several times.
b. Write your own notes or create your own spread sheets based on the USGBC reference guide.
c. Do every set of mock exams that you can find.

Pros:
a. You have an excellent chance of passing if you can REALLY read the reference guide. In fact, several readers did pass the exam using this approach.

Cons:
a. Your score may be either very high or very low (probably either range from 180 to 200, OR fail).
b. You need to spend two months or more to prepare and pass the exam.
c. You drag the exam prep process too long, and become tired of reading the USGBC reference guide, OR you can NOT find enough time to read the reference guide, and you end up failing the exam.

If you can pass the specialty exam, you should be able to pass the LEED Green Associate Exam. Make sure you download the PDF files listed in the candidate's handbook and peruse them.

BD+C V4 exam prep

I have just passed LEED BD+C V4 exam. Thanks to BD+C Mock Exam.

It gives a good overview and strategies to take the exam.

Exam questions included in book gives a comprehensive overview and helps prepare what to expect in exam.

Gets the job done...

This is a solid practice test for the LEED AP BD&C exam. There are two tests in the book...the first test is the same GA mock exam as the one in the GA Mock Exam book(so definitely no need to buy BOTH mock exam books, just the BD&C). The second test in the book is the BD&C one. It is somewhat harder than the actual exam (which I passed). The answer explanations in the back are well explained!! It does ask a significant amount of refrigerant questions though...which there might have been two on the actual exam (but the heads up the book provided was appreciated).

This book asks questions like:
(Choose 3):
A. Answer 1
B. Answer 2
C. Answer 3
D. Answer 4
E. Answer 5

While the exam asks questions like:
(Choose 1):
A. Answer 1, Answer 2, Answer 3
B. Answer 2, Answer 3, Answer 4

Get This Book and the Gang Chen's BD&C Exam Guide and You're Set

I passed the LEED Exam on the Mock Exam and LEED v4 BD&C by Gang Chen books alone. I just had these two books, and printed out the USGBC/ GBCI PDF's he recommends. I passed both the Green Associate and BD&C portions. All I did was spend a month on the GA portion, then the 2nd month on the BD&C portion using the above-mentioned materials and that's it. I do have experience as a Mechanical Engineer with LEED projects in the past (HVAC and Building Envelope Energy Calculations/ Modeling) which helped on the procedural stuff, but Gang Chen's books cover this also. Get a highlighter so you're more engaged with what you're reading (slowly) and you'll be fine.

Review your highlights a week-and-a-half prior to the exam and follow the author's advice on test prep. The Mock Exam book gives you an excellent "feel" for the test questions (which felt familiar in style on the actual exam), and the questions themselves had info in them that came in handy on the actual test.

    Readers who manage to put the hyperbolic and misleading subtitle aside will find this an enjoyable if unremarkable addition to the ceaseless, CSI-inspired forensic subgenre of true crime. Mann, deputy director of the federal Central Identification Laboratory in Hawaii, studied with masters of the field, including the legendary Body Farm founder, Bill Bass. The 20 chapters do a nice job of presenting the essence of forensic anthropology, although there is little that will be new to anyone who has read a similarly themed book (and Bass recently penned his own memoir, a better place for a newcomer to start). Mann's skill and dedication are unquestioned—he pieced together the smashed bones of one of the victims of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer—and his role in helping to identify soldiers' remains is admirable, but many of his case studies are similar, and a number end inconclusively (belying the book's title). The author might have done better to present fewer war stories, but to look at each in greater depth. (Mar. 28)

    Mann, who got his Ph.D. in physical anthropology at age 51, came to forensics after a stint at a funeral home during college eventually led to study at the infamous Body Farm, "a school for the living taught by the dead," where he stands out among the crowd so much that the famed forensic anthropologist Bill Bass takes him on as an assistant. Mann's career has been filled with colorful and varied cases, ranging from figuring out whether a severed, mummified torso was that of a male or a female to identifying the remains of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer's first victim, a young hitchhiker he picked up and beat to death. Not all cases get solved, at least not right away--a soldier's remains are discovered, analyzed, and identified 48 years after his disappearance, but a leg that is discovered in a natural pool in Oahu remains unidentified despite several clues.     This isnt your huckleberry if you want to learn anything-much about death investigations. The author is skimpy about what it is he actually does or how he identifies people from their remains. This is a common problem in many books; the authors cant or wont reveal what it is they do. I suspect a lawyer was looking over his shoulder and breathing down his neck as he wrote the book. It has lawyer fingerprints and drool all over it.

    It gets two stars because it's an interesting yarn. Too interesting. I'd leave out all the personal stuff about his hobo days and wanton youth. But he needed to fill the pages with something, because he says so little about what he actually does. So there are plenty of interesting digressions.

    It's not a keeper, and in a year no one will remember it.

    Just Because you Can, Doesn't Mean You Should

    Because I not only am a practicing forensic pathologist, I also teach the subject. I am always looking for books on the subject. Forensic anthropology is not my area of expertise, and I've read the memoirs of many forensic anthropologists. The TV series "Bones" has stimulated a lot of interest in the field. Forensic Detective, How I Cracked the World's Toughest Cases will go a long way to killing interest in the field. I hat to stop reading it, because I was in too much pain, the book kept hitting me in the face as I fell asleep reading it. The chapter about how Dr. Mann got into the field was mildly interesting, and the bits about the politics of choosing the unknown soldier was also interesting. For the rest, I just couldn't finish the book. The material has been gone over before, and better, by other authors. Dr. Mann would have been helped by a better ghostwriter.

    Bottom line, save your money.

    A lot of value for the student, a lot of work for the instructor

    I am using this textbook in my college (Math Education majors) Higher Geometry class this semester. The book is very good, it covers very relevant and interesting topics, and is by far the cheapest textbook ever. However as the instructor, I have to spend hours to look up the prerequisites from high school needed to understand all of the theorems. This is true mostly of Chapter One. Often times a five line proof in the textbook takes most of the hour to present properly in the classroom because most of the steps are missing. For the students this is a great deal if the instructor does all the work; for the instructor, a book that would cover the same subjects but with full proofs and a "prerequisites" section would be much more helpful. We are however all fans of the hints in the back of the book to solve the end of section problems.

    This book really helps get into the nitty-gritty of any character. It uses simple texts and it is easy to find the exact kind of character you want to create. I discovered some character traits I hadn't even thought of before reading this book. Great tool, it will always be next to my dictionary on my desk.

    A great resource, unfortunately misunderstood by some

    I almost passed on this book due to some of the negative reviews here, but I'm glad I didn't. I spotted this on the shelf at a local book store and sat down with it for ten minutes. After that I bought it without hesitation. I'm only knocking one star off because it could be better organized (mostly inconsistencies in presentation, though it's easy to read, it would just be easier to scan through with a little reworking).

    I think most of the negative reviewers were either expecting a book about creating characters (similar to Orson Scott Card's wonderful Characters and Viewpoints, for example), or were expecting an in depth discussion of psychological issues. This book is neither of those. I'd almost call it an overview of armchair psychology, in that is briefly discusses the behaviors most commonly associated with various disorders and life circumstances, but doesn't get into the subtleties or the exceptions. For example, the traits listed for first born children don't really fit me, but they do apply to most other first born children I've known. On the other hand, one of the personality types fits me perfectly (The Creative), and people I've known with various disorders are certainly present in the descriptions given, even if it doesn't all apply.

    All of this is merely a starting point, a list of the most common traits associated with these topics. Nothing is set in stone, there are no "rules" for how to apply this information. Personally, I found this to be very helpful. For example, I was having some trouble defining an important character in a story I'm working on. At first, he was basically a collection of traits designed to serve the plot. That's fine, except that he was so important I needed him to breath, but was having trouble nailing down interesting but believable behaviors for him. After going through the personality types, it was obvious that he was a Manipulator type. Not 100%, but then no one is. The brief description and list of internal traits and interpersonal behaviors got me thinking in new directions about how he sees himself and how he acts towards others. I didn't take the traits listed and make him exactly that, because then he would be simply a stereotype, rather I took what was there as a starting point, threw half of it away, and meshed what was left with what I already had. Voila, I now have a more interesting character who rings true, and drives the story forward without being simply a plot device.

    If you're looking for a brief overview of typical human behavior, this is a great resource. If you want more depth, this will still give you a solid starting point. Just expect to do the real work yourself, and to take your characters beyond that starting point if you want to make them "real".
