Not really a cookbook

I was thinking this would be a typical cookbook where an experienced programmer could quickly get up to speed on a topic by reading through recipes, which has always been in my experience, a bunch of different short, discreet and concise code samples.

Unfortunately, this book has samples that are wordy and tie together with each other. I felt like I already got this from Unity3D's free tutorials and was looking for more depth.

I think it's hard for an author to hit the sweet spot with an audience like Unity though, since many of its users come from so many different backgrounds. However, Mr. Murray should probably remove "cookbook" from the title.

Overall, not a bad book, but not as expected either.

Good Book - terrible eBook formatting.

The content is good. I find the topics at the right speed for experienced developers needing to understand unity game development.
My two star rating relates to the kindle version of the book. You need to pan and zoom to read the page. I much prefer standard kindle format where i can read with one hand.

If you want to offer this format, it should be optional; there should be a kindle optimized version available as well.

but I love this book

Since this book is new I wanted to get my review up since their are mixed reviews already. I have not finished the entire book, but I love this book. It feels like a well versed lecture in many ways in a class I would be very excited to attend. I ask my Java/C#/C++ teachers about ideas on how to implement ideas and I've never gotten straight answers, they avoid the subject in some ways because they've never developed the types of games and interactivity I'm making.

I like it because it feels like an intermediate programming book. We jumped straight to classes, having a public class and making it have private members. Standards of programming but he also addresses global variables in some situations and other ways to pass data. It's very focused on having portable code so by saying that (I would have a lot of Professors jump down by back about globals or other ideas) the author makes design decisions, which I've also had to make on my own but it feels good to see how another programmer went through some of the same steps and he is much more experienced.

This already has me understanding Inheritance in a more applicable way than I ever have before although I've worked with this topic many times.

I'm excited to keep reading and I'm glad there is finally a book that doesn't go step by step C# Programming because I've been working with this language and programming for years now.

I'm glad someone wrote a Cookbook for Unity and a book that really gets into game code design while forcing me to really see it in action.

I'm using Unity's API along with this to cover the Unity specific basics. You can't get far in any language I feel as a student without applying the documentation they provide on how their API breaks down. Unity has a great guide too on this.

So thankyou for writing a book that understands I'm not brand new to programming and a lot of detailed information in some basic concepts would not make this a Cookbook. He gives good explanations of some more advanced topics in programming (what I see as) that have been explained to me before but I finally get to see in action in ways that help me understand game programming even more.

By game programming we all know that this is working with Unity so I obviously don't mean a book on how to build an engine.

I hope this helps someone in their choice if they're on the fence. If I was new to programming I would definitely read other C# books first to really understand what is happening in this book. I don't think things would be clicking in my mind like they are if this is my first crack at the subject. C# 5.0 For Dummies was a good reference for me when I worked out of Visual C# 2012, and C# 5.0 in a Nutshell as a reference really helped me put into place some classes as I go forward.

That being said I hope everyone buys this book so authors keep writing books like this one. He is pulling everything together.

I will edit this once I finish the book or if something changes a lot.

This is a reprint of a previous book. While the text is fairly good, it makes references to many illustrations which are not in the reprinted edition. Therefore, I would not recommend it!

The original title to this classic work was "Glimpses of Masonic History." This showed the author's purpose to demonstrate a direct connection between modern masonry and the ancient mystery religions. How well he made this case is up to the reader to decide. Personally, it is obvious to me that there is a golden thread connecting the traditions. This is most obvious at the level of the Occult School (as opposed to the "Authentic", Anthropological", and "Mystical" Schools.)

Leadbeater showed a remarkable knowledge of the Egyptian, Cretan, Jewish, Greek, and Mithraic mysteries. This is knowledge based not merely on a deep familiarity with ancient written source works and archeological finds, but on the unconventional knowing of the clairvoyant. Leadbeater was considered one of the most distinguished clairvoyants of his day. You will find much here that is not included in more "scholarly" works. Needless to say, such knowledge is not varifiable to the satisfaction of most of the scientific establishment. Yet, this is not to say that it is in error.

The second half of the book covers the operative masonry of Medieval Times, and then the more traditional history of speculative masonry in the early 17th century. It ends with an examination of the Co-Masonic Order (a more metaphysical branch of masonry closely associated with the Theosophical Society, and which accepts both men and women.)

Truth and fiction.

There is a lot of information in this book.The nature of Freemasonry makes proving or disproving the authors ideas impossible.I am not a Freemason.My interest in the subject relates to the "Jewish Mysteries" and ties to King Solomon and other Hebrew people.Afer reading this book I
feel that King Solomon was influential on Freemasonry.
I strongly disagree that Yehusha(Christ)participated in these secret societies.Some of the rites do mimic the crucifixion and resurrection.Which I find interesting.

Mr.Leadbetter puts forth an interesting theory of who Hiram Abiff was.Was he in the Bible?He states that the death of Hiram Abiff was not as portrayed in masonic legend.He was a decorator rather than an architect.

The masonic concept of the "trinity" of Osiris,Isis,and Horus parallels other sun worship cults.

I disagree with the author's opinion on the Four Beasts found in Revelation and Ezekiel.He felt that those beasts correlate to four elements/four brothers of Horus.The problem with that is that there is no ape listed in the Four Biblical Beasts.I personally am convinced that the four beasts are related directly to the four brigade emblems of the Israelite tribes.

Mr.Leadbetter discussed the double meaning of words,especially regarding "The Book of the Dead".
The date of the "mourning the death of Osiris" in winter or the "slaying of the sun" by dark forces are close to those of Christmas celebrations today.

Some of the most surprising ideas in this book are:
*King Solomon built a temple for Astarte.
*In Red Masonry there was a search for a hidden vault buried deep in the Earth in which was hidden the Name of God.
*Festivals of two well-known patron saints-St.John the Baptist and St.John the Evangelist were celebrated.
*Mention of Jachin and Boaz,the two pillars from Solomon's Temple.
*The history and origin of the Knights Templar and their role as financiers.
*Mr.Leadbetter wrote about some of the beliefs of early church fathers that if true,are disturbing.This is the second book I have read that makes similar claims of participation in the hidden mysteries.
*His theory on the loss of the pronunciation of the sacred Name was wrong in my opinion.He believes that loss was accidental due to memory loss as a result of captivity.I don't believe that the scribes or High Priests ever lost memory of the Name.They hid it.

While I don't agree with some of C.W.Leadbetter's theories,this book really does have a lot of history and general information on Freemasonry and related societies.This book provided me with some potential answers that I was looking for.I give it 4 stars for relevant content and readability.

Excellent collection. If you read one book on film, read this.

This collection builds on seminal work on Film by the philosopher Stanley Cavell, whose works include, The Claim of Reason & The World Viewed: Reflections on the Ontology of Film. Cavell's work, in turn, is deeply influenced by the Philosophy of Ludwig Wittgenstein (see the collection The New Wittgenstein).
The approach to film explored in this collection is one that eschews the application of theory to film. Film studies has generally approached film through theory: psychoanalytic, Marxist, Feminist, cognitive etc. This serves to render the film under discussion. This collection also eschews the approach evident in recent books on the philosophy of film or those that use films to illustrate philosophy (e.g. Rowlands' The Philosopher at the End of the Universe). While the books in the latter category have their place, they merely use film as a resource for the dramatisation of philosophical problems. In contrast the essays in the collection under review here read the films they discuss as doing philosophy, exploring philosophical themes, actively thinking through philosophical problems. The collection contains a fascinating interview with Stanley Cavell. Stephen Mulhall revisits his own earlier writings on the Alien films, first discussed in On Film. Phil Hutchinson and Rupert Read bring to life the philosophical work undertaken by Christopher Nolan's film Memento, seeing it as a therapeutic dialogue in the manner of Wittgenstein's Philosophical Investigations. The book also contains chapters on Fight Club and Terence Malick's The Thin Red Line (Malick was a student of Cavell's at Harvard; the lead character in the film is named Witt...). Contributors include Simon Glendinning, author of The Idea of Continental Philosophy; Simon Critchley; and Andrew Klevan.
A groundbreaking and enjoyable collection.

Just because you are your household, don't assume eating solo limits you to having pizza, pancakes, or meat loaf in restaurants; buying them already prepared; or having to file extra portions in the freezer or the dustbin. As Jane Doerfer proves in Going Solo in the Kitchen, with no more effort than when cooking for two or more, one person can eat well and dine beautifully.

Doerfer's main strategies are to use fresh ingredients and to make friends with supermarket staff who can accommodate her needs in the land of large families. She gives detailed advice on storing foods--cooked chicken, for example, tastes better and has better texture when stored in liquid (like a sauce or broth), while potato salads and other prepared dishes keep better longer when left unsalted until just before serving.

Solo cooks do have advantages: you can eat what you want, as often as you want it, and the cost of a steak or lobster dinner is only for one.

Doerfer offers variations for recycling in case of leftovers. Her description of how to cut up a whole chicken is graphically clear (see "Chicken Management") and will save you money.

The recipes and techniques Doerfer offers will brighten the lives of solitary diners who love variety, good food, and home cooking. Doerfer, who publishes a travel newsletter called Going Solo, also runs Going Solo in the Kitchen, a cooking school for cooks on their own. She provides more than 300 single-serving recipes along with the tricks and strategies she has devised to make cooking for oneself appealing, efficient, and economical. Many of the recipes include two or more variations, and there are ideas for leftovers as well. Just about all are quick and simple to prepare, and they are also tempting enough to lure "solos" used to depending on takeout or microwave dinners into the kitchen for some real food. Recommended.

The advice here is clearly based on personal experience, with a view of meal preparation as a comfort at the end of a workday rather than as an unpleasant chore. Doerfer's counsel extends to shopping tips and good habits for food storage. Plenty of fresh vegetable, poultry, seafood, meat, and soup and pasta dishes are featured, and included among numerous salad options are ethnic offerings, such as tabbouleh, guacamole, and couscous. Often, simple variations for reducing cooking time and enhancing a dish are noted--grating zucchini before saute{‚}eing, for instance. Single cooks should find Doerfer's enthusiasm contagious and the book's entire presentation inviting, full as it is of encouraging, practical suggestions for anyone wishing to escape from the trap of convenience foods. Excellent resource for single cooks!

How refreshing to enjoy a realistic approach to cooking for one! Ingredients used throughout the cookbook are those that the average person has on hand, unlike most cookbooks on the market. In the rare event that a special ingredient is called for, an explanation is provided on how to shop for the ingredient and how to store it for maximum shelf life. Realistic freezer space is also considered, which gives this book an edge over others.
I greatly appreciate the modifications at the end of many recipes indicating what other ingredients may be substituted effectively (eg: to use chicken instead of shrimp, do this...). To me, learning a cooking technique has become more valuable after reading this book than simply memorizing a recipe. Offered suggestions for modifications illustrates the intention of each recipe (the specific process used, if you will). People say that cooking is not a mystery; it is simply a skill acquired through learning a few cooking methods and adjusting them creatively. This book helped me learn the basics so I can Finally begin to do my own exploring.
I have searched for years for a practical cookbook such as this. Since I began experimenting with recipes found in this text, my friends absolutely rave about my cooking! And for me, I have found myself declining invitations for fast food or pizza in favor of trying a new recipe in my own kitchen using a few leftovers from the previous day. I'm eating healthier, losing weight, and saving money. What could be better? Thank you for this book! Bravo!

New and experienced solo cooks rejoice!

Even without a single recipe--and there are more than 350 of them if you didn't notice--this book is a wonderfully enjoyable tutorial for solo shopping in family-sized stores, managing food until it's prepared and served, varying the ingredients to match your tastes (or pantry) and finally, suggestions for leftovers right there at the end of the recipe, where they belong--sort of a thesaurus cooking concept. I love that.
Jane is nutritionally aware and savvy, with a good background in both gardening and using the stuff that comes out of one and into the kitchen to taste advantage.
But wait! There's another important dimension to this book: Jane Doerfer was not *always* a solo cook, nor was she wearing the latest in apron and kitchen gadget-fashions when she typed the manuscript (shameless plug for Le Crueuset, aside). Instead, I suspect she found herself "suddenly solo" and needing to make the best of it--which she clearly does.
This book is a good mix of earthy "touchable" and "do-able" meals and ingredients and what I might call evening bistro fare. I also found it uplifting, inspiring, and an excellent reminder of the many silver linings to be found beneath the cloud of finding yourself unexpectedly dining alone--a cloud which drives so many souls to accepting food passed through a rolled-down car-window even though they may know better.
The recipes and ideas are great and they work. The book was so well focused to my interest that I read the entire thing in a couple of sittings, taking pantry-stock notes, and folding page corners as I went along.
The hardcover is already out-of-print I see. If you are a solo cook, buy this book now, while it's still available, in stock, and in print and you will join me in thanking Jane for troubling herself to write these things down.

good basic info, some good recipes

lots of great basic advice - kitchen utensils, food storage, shopping tips. one of the best things about this book is that following nearly every recipe is a section on possible variations, and then suggestions for leftovers. perfect for someone like me who likes to plan out meals in advance. plus that sort of thing keeps me creative in the kitchen. the recipes are very user friendly, and her tone is conversationally fun. the actual recipe's themselves are good but not outstanding. I haven't disliked anything I've made from this book. I think the recipes are better in Toni Lydecker's SERVE'S ONE, but this book is definately a solid buy, especially if you are semi - new to cooking for just yourself. (another plus is that most of the recipes I've tried up-size easily if need be)

Missing answer key kills the usefulness

The lab exercises provided are excellent. The problem is, the lab is full of questions, and there is no answer key provided. So there's no way to validate if you have the correct answer to the questions. This makes it very hard to know if you've actually learned what they are supposed to be teaching you. As such, this is of questionable value.
