About the Author
Gary Plowman is an Indie Game Developer and Web Developer with a passion for retro computing and retrogaming. This book covers coding fun arcade games in BASIC. The book has been used at STEM events and kids coding seminars across UK & Europe. Teachers have also used the book for introducing game coding to kids in the classroom. In the 1980s computer magazines were bought for their Type-In games by eager young teenagers looking to decipher the mysteries of early microcomputers. The Type-in listings were very important as a first step to learning the coding language of a machine and allowed kids and teenagers to pick up the concepts as they typed in a listing for a game or utility. This book tries to recreate that feeling but in a more structured and user-friendly way and provides a breakdown of the key concepts such as game loops, collision detection, game play improvements and suggestions for further enhancing the games. The book has been bought and used by teachers, STEM facilitators, ZX Spectrum fans, Commodore 64 & Amiga owners too! Sinclair BASIC is a fun and simple language but very productive and capable for learning the basics of computer coding.

I read The Alchemist earlier this year, and when I saw the news about the Graphic Novel edition, I was excited. I received this version as a gift Christmas morning, and finished it before dinner. It's a nice collectible version, but if you're looking to get more out of the story, or you're only going to read one or the other, go with the original version of The Alchemist. Personally, these two will sit side-by-side on my bookshelf - each has its own place & purpose.

I read Coelho's book before trying this graphic novel. In comparison, I found the graphics distracting; I was less able to imagine the characters while reading as I was forced to look at the artists rendition of their faces, which was different than I had pictured them. The artist is talented, so not for any lack of skill, but it was just too much.

Overall, if you're looking to become acquainted with The Alchemist, I would suggest reading the first book, not the graphic novel.

A Life-Changer

"When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it." The Alchemist is a delightful book about realizing your destiny. I had always heard of Paulo Coelho and I knew that "The Alchemist" was the book of his to read. However, it wasn't until it was gifted to me by my cousin that I actually read it. This is the most inspiring book you will ever read. The protagonist, Santiago, a young shepherd boy, embarks on a journey to fulfill his destiny. His tale starts in the mountains of Spain with a recurring dream of visions of the Great Pyramids of Egypt. At the onset of the tale, the boy is a kind of aimless vagrant who travels the lands with his sheep. He is encouraged by a few wise people to pursue his vision and demonstrate to the boy that this is very well his destiny. And Voila; we are taken on his journey from Spain, to the bustling markets of Northern Algeria and into the perilous deserts of Egypt. Coelho has this intangible way of making you deeply engrossed in this boy's story. This is likely because we see ourselves and our own path to realize our own destinies in the boy. The boy is you. The boy is me. In more ways than not, "The Alchemist" is a kind of self help book. A book where the story/literature exists largely so that the author can present philosophical ideas about how to live. This is something I prefer over a standard Self Help book with a step by step procedure. Instead, we are given a story with characters whom we care about and through this story and through these characters we can extract self help guidance. Many people, like myself, would prefer this over a scientific, step by step methodical approach.

"You will never be able to escape from your heart. So it's better to listen to what it has to say. That way you'll never have fear of an unanticipated blow." I have never been the type to bookmark certain lines or pages in a book because I liked a line or quote. Nothing has ever moved me so much as to require my lazy ass to post it note my book. However, if you look at my copy of "The Alchemist," you'll find about 15 post it notes stuck in there from quotes i loved. The story is just beautiful; whether I had a session of reading it for 5 straight chapters or I only read about a page, every time I closed the book, I felt myself have love and compassion for the world. No other book has had this impact on me.

An inspiring, heartwarming and incredibly moving read

Inspiring, heartwarming, and incredibly moving, WINDFALL is a story about love and loss, and about good luck, bad luck, and no luck. It’s about being true to oneself, about taking chances, about moving forward, and about making a difference. It’s an utterly enchanting and totally addictive read that is sure to make every reader smile and make them wonder how their lives might change with a windfall.

Alice never imagined that the lottery ticket she bought for Teddy, her best friend and secret love, on his birthday would change everything. It was supposed to be a gag gift from one very unlucky person to another. But when it turns out to be one of three winning tickets for over 140 million, it’s not only Teddy’s circumstances that will be radically altered, her entire world is at risk of being turned upside down.

As much as she wishes he had never won, she is just as thrilled that he had. But it complicates things. For him. For her. For them. And with just how difficult her life has been already, she’s not really sure she can roll with the changes or deal with the fallout that comes along with such a big payout. Especially when it seems like her relationship with Teddy is what’s on the line.

Jennifer E. Smith didn’t write a simple good luck, happily-ever-after love story - WINDFALL was so much more. The money didn’t magically erase all of Alice and Teddy’s problems. It didn’t rewrite their pasts. It provided opportunities, but it also created problems where none had existed before. And it forced them both to confront things they’d managed to avoid for a long while.

What she did write is a story that has depth and emotion and complexity. A story that is uplifting, that provokes thought, that is achingly sad and beautiful and is also heartfelt and hopeful. She introduces two characters who are connected because of the tragedies in their pasts, but whose current good fortune could tear them apart. She writes about family, and friendship, and generosity, and second chances, and difficult choices, and possibility, and unrequited love.

And she puts it all together in a story that is meaningful and romantic and endlessly readable.

WINDFALL is an absolute must for those who believe in luck over fate, who are curious to meet someone who would contemplate turning down millions to avoid upsetting the status quo, who love stories that offer ideas for consideration, and who prefer a story they can devour in one sitting.

Ever since I read The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight, I've been a fan of Jennifer E. Smith. I am always happy to hear that she has a new book out. Her books are essentially teen friendship stories. There is usually a romance but its not the main focus of the plot. There's very little darkness in her books. They are fun, reliably clean reads which I like to read and discuss with my daughter. Windfall in particular, with its plot about a teenager winning the lottery and how that win changed everything raised some really interestingly and fun things to talk about. There's a lot of food for thought in there about what family means, characters you'll like and root for, but who's choices you will not necessarily agree with. It's a propulsive, hard to put down, good read.
