84, Charing Cross Road is a charming record of bibliophilia, cultural difference, and imaginative sympathy. For 20 years, an outspoken New York writer and a rather more restrained London bookseller carried on an increasingly touching correspondence. In her first letter to Marks & Co., Helene Hanff encloses a wish list, but warns, "The phrase 'antiquarian booksellers' scares me somewhat, as I equate 'antique' with expensive." Twenty days later, on October 25, 1949, a correspondent identified only as FPD let Hanff know that works by Hazlitt and Robert Louis Stevenson would be coming under separate cover. When they arrive, Hanff is ecstatic--but unsure she'll ever conquer "bilingual arithmetic." By early December 1949, Hanff is suddenly worried that the six-pound ham she's sent off to augment British rations will arrive in a kosher office. But only when FPD turns out to have an actual name, Frank Doel, does the real fun begin.

Two years later, Hanff is outraged that Marks & Co. has dared to send an abridged Pepys diary. "i enclose two limp singles, i will make do with this thing till you find me a real Pepys. THEN i will rip up this ersatz book, page by page, AND WRAP THINGS IN IT." Nonetheless, her postscript asks whether they want fresh or powdered eggs for Christmas. Soon they're sharing news of Frank's family and Hanff's career. No doubt their letters would have continued, but in 1969, the firm's secretary informed her that Frank Doel had died. In the collection's penultimate entry, Helene Hanff urges a tourist friend, "If you happen to pass by 84, Charing Cross Road, kiss it for me. I owe it so much."

This is a terrible edition

This is a terrible edition. I opened the book up to see that "a very bad cess" in the April 10, 1950 letter had been changed to "a very bad success." A bad cess is an Irish curse. I wanted this book for a gift but I'll just be putting it in the Good Will bag.

beautiful book, but be wary of which edition you get

This is a quick, amazing read about a writer and her favorite English bookshop. But make sure you get an older edition, like maybe the 1990 Penguin paperback.

Somehow I ended up with a version that Amazon said was 2013 from Important Books (the copy I actually received says 2014 Stellar Books). This edition has a cheap, sloppy feel. The formatting is awful, there are text errors, and the cover is an overly enlarged version of the image file from Wikipedia's 84, Charing Cross Road page. Seriously. It even has the same small, brown stain in the artwork.

Please, please do yourself a favor and find a professionally printed version of this great book.

Mail-order romance before "You've Got Mail"

What's not to love about this book? Easy to read, no complicated, or stage-crafted, Hollywood infused drama. This is a lovely story (and trust me - I'm a man that NEVER uses the word "lovely" to describe things) about a woman from the Bronx and her transatlantic dalliance with a staid London bookseller. The story is told over changing decades from the aftermath of WWII to the late 70's. Helene Hanff is both the author and subject of this book. The book's title refers to the bookstore's address in London. The story is about her life as a script reader, her love for rare and out of print books, and the bookseller (Frank Doel)who goes to great lengths to find those books for her. Her ability to write about daily events makes you see and feel the changes that are occurring in America while Europe struggles to rebuild. Before "You've Got Mail", "When Harry Met Sally", or even "The Notebook" - people would sometimes meet as penpals and could be charmed by one another's kindnesses. There are no flashes of nudity here, no sordid details of extramarital affairs (Frank is married, with children). Instead, you'll find two people who become friends through the mail and still respect one another in the morning. A great read!
