About the Author
Thomas A. Severini is a professor of statistics at Northwestern University. He is a fellow of the American Statistical Association and the author of Likelihood Methods in Statistics and Elements of Distribution Theory. He received his PhD in statistics from the University of Chicago. His research areas include likelihood inference, nonparametric and semiparametric methods, and applications to econometrics.

Mandatory addition for sports bettors

This well-written text focuses on two areas: basic probability theory, and how to properly use various regressions in modeling. There are many examples using sports data answering sports related questions. While the first half of the book may be redundant to experienced sports bettors, the second half was the best I have ever read explaining how to properly use regressions to develop models. The examples identified problems with regressions (e.g., correlated or weak predictors) and alternative ways to attack models with those issues. The analysis and examples of regressions was clear and invaluable. I would recommend this book to any sports bettor, and especially those that are focusing more on "big data" modeling approaches to attack major markets or prop betting.

Excellent primer--geared towards the newbie

Excellent primer. A little bit more of a "light" read than I thought it would be--but I do have a statistics background and some familiarity with advanced stats. Didn't give it 5 stars because it didn't have any really advanced methods. I had hoped the book would cover a few advanced techniques--perhaps with related 'R' or SAS code. Examples could have included data mining techniques such as random forests or nearest neighbors (knn). Certainly keeping the approaches limited to techniques that can largely be performed with spreadsheet software tools will allow the book to appeal to a larger audience. But I think it could have had an additional section for more advanced readers--perhaps at the end--covering more advanced techniques requiring statistics software. But that aside, it was an enjoyable read that gave me a few ideas. Unfortunately, it just didn't get into techniques I was hoping to see in action.
