Skip the book - use the online help

I bought this book for a graduate level Design of Experiments class. It was not on the course list, but I figured the book might give me a leg up in the class. (We used Montgomery's DOE textbook to which this is a companion.)

My recommendation would be to skip the book and invest an hour or two just playing with Minitab. It is a fairly simple program to use, and every single command window has a "help" button - and for the most part, the help is indeed useful, providing a thorough explanation, including not only a "how to" as well as the underlying theory or formula. If you screw up, Minitab's error windows will usually guide you in the right direction.

Over the course of the semester, I only referenced the book a couple of times, and in all the cases, I found a better answer either through Montgomery's textbook, poking around Minitab, or using Google.

If you are uncomfortable diving into a new piece of software, or you like having things explicitly spelled out for you, there might be some justification. But for the majority of cases, Montgomery's DOE book will probably suffice.

Disappointed!

Disappointed! I'm in a Blackbelt class. My instructor favors Excel, but we have Minitab at work. My goal in purchasing this book was to determine how to use Minitab. One of the difficulties in using Minitab is how to configure the data. I had hoped to see how the author configures the data within the Minitab worksheet. Unfortunately the URL in the book, where the sample data is supposed to be stored, errors out and the Wiley site has the wrong data. Wiley refuses to fix the problem--I would think the author would enthusiastically cooperate, but I doubt they have taken the time to call him. I will check the Wiley site from time to time to see when and if the data is corrected. Until the data is fixed, this book is worthless for my purposes. Wiley trouble ticket number 100908-000196.

This is little more than an answer key companion to the book - something that should be given in the textbook itself, but is an excuse to make you pay more money. If you can possibly get away without buying it do so as all you will get is just the final answer (no explanation of how to reach it) and a bunch of minitab output (that in most cases you could get yourself by just downloading the free minitab software). Pointless companion to a badly written book.

The story of that is in Montana's Vamp (Brac Pack 16), but no mention of even a pregnancy, just the possibility. Nevada's other dad is Montana (wolf), a big huge bald headed man. Nevada is a wolf, has been raised in the Brac Pack, trained with the sentries, and is coming out of a bad relationship. He relocates to Dalton Falls and of course meets his mate Taylor.

This is a story with a lot happening around Taylor and Nevada and not a lot of romance and down time for the two. There was very little about the new pack that's forming in Dalton Falls. It was nice to see Montana pop up and while he helped, for me it was unclear if he took over or if Matt stood up as an alpha should. Matt isn't written like Maverick where he has a hand in every pie. A story is lacking when a new alpha doesn't take front and center when action is going down. . . . Especially when it affects his pack mate.

All in all a good continuation but it doesn't shine like the Brac Pack Series. I did read Montana's story after this one, just get to the history, and that one was much better written. This series is new, it has room to grow.

May I just add how frustrating it is trying to find this series on Amazon. Goodreads lists the series and Amazon is delayed a good month behind Siren Publishing. The third book is out yet not on Amazon. And Lynn Hagen's page here on Amazon doesn't list this one. I wrote a complaint to Amazon to clear that up. - Dan's Wife

Note: Was the crime boss (cat shifter/lion shifter) the same one as mentioned in the Twin's story?
I was a bit confused about humans taking care of a drug bust yet I thought shifters had their own justice? If that's true how come cats are guarding him and the guy arrested is a cat shifter yet somehow the guy goes free. It was confusing.

Okay Series.

This series is just okay for me. Much like the first book in the series, it once again didn't have the charm and humor of the original series. I'm really kind of disappointed how the children of the original Brac Pack turned out. I did like Taylor and much like the original series, the mates in this one really steal the show. If I hadn't read Ms. Hagen's earlier work, I probably would have liked this one more. It's just hard not to compare the two series and reading this one just makes me want to go back and read her earlier works. I don't want a carbon copy of her earlier series, but I do wish she would go back to her old tried and true formula for writing books. If it ain't broke, don't fix it is my motto.

I've read several of the original Brac Pack series. The writing was fair throughout those, as well, and it's a fairly repetitive series. I suspect that'll be the case here, too. I don't know what made the author start with these characters two books in (after introducing others that were actually pretty interesting in the first one). It's pleasant brain candy, on whole, however; I'm sure I'll continue with Gen 2 anyway. The author is pretty dependable when I'm looking for some light escape from reality.

The understated "catch some air" and the whimsical "log some flight time" are climbers' euphemisms for falling, while "crater" refers to what happens when you log some flight time all the way to the ground. "Summiting," the term for reaching the top of a mountain, seems almost colorless in comparison. The various heroes, risk-takers, incompetents, and individualists Krakauer captures are more than colorful, whether they summit or not. The author is more interested in exploring the addiction of risk--the intensity of effort--than mere triumph. There's the mythical minimalist climber, John Gill, whose fame "rests entirely on assents less than thirty feet high," and the Burgess brothers--freewheeling, free-floating English twins who seem to make all the right decisions when it counts, and hence most often fail to reach the top. Climber-turned-journalist Krakauer circles around the question of why a climber climbs by writing of various aspects of that culture. Revising pieces that appeared in Outside and Smithsonian magazines, he describes being tent-bound in a storm, and the competition among bush pilots flying climbers to Denali. Fresh material discusses related sports: frozen waterwall climbing and box canyon exploration. The obligatory chapters on particular climbs--an aborted attempt on the Eiger Nordwand, a lone ascent of the Devil's Thumb--are less successful in revealing to nonclimbers the emotions that drive a climber. Entertaining but not memorable.

A great read for those at sea level and rising

How to do justice to a writer like Krakauer....well, he's such a good writer that I feel any review I write would suffer compared to the source. Nevertheless, here I go.
This is Krakauer's first book. It's a collection of his previously published articles on mountaineering (save the last one about Devil's Thumb which was written for the book.) What a gread read too whether you are an afficionado of the sport or, like me, you've never seen a pair of crampons in your life (by the way, those are a set of spikes climbers strap to their boots to support themselves and prevent slipping on icy slopes.) Some of the famous peaks that make an appearance here include K2, Mt McKinley, and the titular Eiger. Throughout you will read about some of the eccentric personalities in the international climbing community, personal triumph and inspiration, offshoots like bouldering and waterfall climbing, and horrific tragedy.
If you read Into Thin Air, you'll be surprised at how funny this book is. Krakauer displays a wry, self-deprecating wit in several of these stories-something the somber subject matter of the latter book didn't permit. The last one, about his decision to solo the Devil's Thumb in Alaska in his early twenties is hysterical.
Anyone who can make a story about being tentbound or the inventor of the perfect ice axe riveting deserves attention. If you are on the fence, just go ahead and get this book. It's definitely worth it.

Excellent Collection of Stories

"Eiger Dreams" is a compelling collection of twelve stories by mountaineering writer Jon Krakauer. Included are several first person accounts of his own adventures, including his life-defining attempt to climb the Devil's Thimb in Alaska as a young man and his later failed attempt to scale the Eiger face. Krakauer also failed in his attempt to climb Mount McKinley, but manages to say more with one of his defeats than other climbers do with their success.
Krakauer also proves himself to be a first rate reporter with his accounts of other mountaineering stories. Particularly good is his tale of John Gill, the man who practically invented "bouldering." Krakauer goes on to describe waterfall climbing, canyoneering and the horrors of being tent bound with his deft narrative touch. At 186 pages, and featuring his easily readable prose, the book is a delightful experience for those who like good adventure stories of the kind featured in Outside Magazine.

I got vertigo reading this

I've read three of Krakauer's books including this one. Into Thin Air is eclipsed by Kenneth Kamler's Doctor On Everest, but Krakauer's own Under The Banner Of Heaven and Eiger Dreams are in a class by themselves. I have never had a fear of heights, but the stories in this book, particularly the one of his climb of the Devil's Thumb, a volcanic chimney in Alaska, lifting hundreds of feet into thin air is perhaps one of the most evocative pieces of writing I've ever read. If you are fascinated by mountins and the madmen and crazy women who climb them, this is your book. Either it will make you drop everything and head for the high remote places of the world, or render you at least sane enough to say, "I think I'll take my adventure in another way." Say in some weird polygamous community in southern Utah or northern Arizona. Krakauer knows mountains, and he knows how to take us with him, shaking, sweating and not daring look down, up a shear, icy face. This is great outdoor adventure writing. Highly recommended. wfh

Why We Never Got President Hart

Make no mistake, Paul Taylor is a gifted author and a talented journalist.
This is the story of Paul Taylor the Washington Post reporter that broke the story of Gary Hart and Donna Rice and ended Hart's chances at being President in 1988. More importantly, Taylor asked "the question" that changed the way media cover politicians.
"Did you commit adultery?" There it is. Simple by today's standards of DNA dresses and DWI Presidents.
By understand what happened to Hart, you can see the Clinton circus coming a mile away. Taylor gives honest account of one of the first political/media "feeding frenzies."
If you believe that Taylor didn't understand the watershed moment in politics he was creating when he asked Hart "the question" (and I'm not sure I buy it) than you can really get into Taylor's first hand account of the campaign, the challenge, the chase and the media explosion that followed.
The reason I gave it four stars and not five, is that Taylor gets too preachy in the end by using his experience with the demise of Hart to tell us what is wrong with Presidential politics and how we need to fix it.
The fact that he is right has nothing to do with it. He is right, but that's not why I bought the book.
In short: good writing, good story, good reference point to understand the media/presidential politics relationship. Worth the time to read but not going to change history as Taylor clearly hoped it would.

Excellent Snapshots From An Accidental Player

Paul Taylor is the reporter who used the `A word' to derail Gary Hart's floundering campaign in 1988. It's rare that a reporter has as much influence over the nomination process, and the book provides a unique insight into the campaign from someone who, however briefly, had a very real effect on the election. At first it might seem that Taylor's emphasis on his own actions smack of delusions of grandeur, but he is really out to examine the roll of the press in a campaign, and only emphasizes his role early on because of his importance in bringing down Hart. The book is not a nuts and bolts exploration of the trench warfare of the election in the tradition of Witcover and Germond, but rather a serious of snapshots of important moments in the campaign, well detailed and critically examined. As such it is not the best source for a detailed examination of the whole campaign but more a superb companion piece for such books. It also is an excellent summery for those who want a more general overview of the campaign. Highly recommended.
